However, the atmosphere changed significantly after the film's release. As the film, which is based on the shooting of First Lady Yuk Young-soo that occurred on August 15, 1974, faced criticism from political circles and related organizations for presenting settings that differ from some facts in the process of reconstructing the actual historical event, the controversy spread. In particular, opinions clashed over whether the new interpretations and dramatic settings of the actual event could be accepted as historical facts by the audience.
The controversy did not stop with the actors appearing directly in the film. Protest comments regarding the film continued on the SNS accounts of fellow actors who recommended the work. In particular, reactions questioning the film's recommendations or raising doubts about historical awareness appeared on the posts of Lee Young-ae, Kim Go-eun, Park Byung-eun, and others. Even though they did not appear directly in the film, they ended up standing in the middle of the controversy simply because they watched and recommended the work.
The debate surrounding the cast also spread to other areas. In the YouTube advertisement videos and SNS posts of a fast-food brand for which Yoo Hae-jin serves as an advertising model, it was confirmed that writing comments has been restricted, and protest reactions related to the film continued on the SNS accounts of cast members such as Lee Min-ho and Ryu Hye-young. As the historical debate surrounding the work spreads to the individual activities of the actors and online communication spaces, it is causing quite a stir in the film industry.
In this situation, attention is being focused on the background as it has been learned that the 42 recommendations, which were a major subject of promotion at the time of release, have all been deleted. However, it has not been specifically confirmed who deleted the recommendations or for what reason. Whether it is directly related to the historical distortion controversy has also not been revealed. Therefore, there are still unconfirmed parts to conclude that the deletion of the recommendations itself is a response to the controversy.
'The Assassin(s)' is a mystery thriller directed by Hur Jin-ho and starring Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il, Lee Min-ho, and others. Based on the shooting of First Lady Yuk Young-soo that occurred in 1974, it dramatically unravels possibilities that differ from the circumstances of the incident officially known at the time. It is at this very point that the debate over the scope of cinematic imagination began. As a feature film based on a historical event, views that creative freedom should be recognized are clashing with arguments that responsibility for factual accuracy is required since it deals with real people and actual events.
As the controversy grew, the production team stated their position that they did not make the film for the purpose of newly establishing a specific historical conclusion or denying/distorting existing facts. The explanation is to the effect that the hypotheses and dramatic settings in the film were not presented as historical facts themselves. Ultimately, the current debate has expanded beyond the completeness or box office success of the work to the question of how much the boundary between actual history and feature films should be allowed to be blurred.
Interestingly, despite the controversy, the film itself has attracted audiences. 'The Assassin(s)' surpassed 1 million cumulative viewers four days after its release, continuing the box office trend in the Chuseok theater market. However, apart from the box office success, the debate surrounding the reconstruction of the historical event is not subsiding easily. Furthermore, as the influence of the controversy enters the scope of actors' SNS, advertisements, and VIP recommendations, the scope of the conflict surrounding a single film appears to be much wider than expected.]]>
