Jang Wonyoung faces renewed attitude controversy after music show interaction
IVE member Jang Wonyoung has faced renewed criticism over her perceived attitude during a music show, though full footage suggests the controversy stems from edited clips.
IVE member Jang Wonyoung faced online criticism following a brief interaction with A2O LITE member Rada during the 950th episode of Mnet's "M COUNTDOWN" on the 22nd. While some netizens labeled her response arrogant, a fan account for Rada released a statement on the 23rd defending Jang Wonyoung and urging people to stop spreading hatred.
IVE member Jang Wonyoung has once again found herself embroiled in an attitude controversy following a brief moment captured during a music broadcast. The situation, which occurred immediately after the rookie girl group A2O LITE took first place, spread rapidly online, drawing criticism from some netizens. However, counterarguments are gaining momentum, noting that the original video shows Jang Wonyoung looking at the other person and moving her head before clapping, suggesting that judging her attitude as rude based solely on short, edited clips is an excessive interpretation.
Jang Wonyoung appeared on the 950th episode of Mnet's "M COUNTDOWN" held on the 22nd at the CJ ENM Center in Sangam-dong, Seoul. On this day, IVE performed their new song "Looks Can Kill," while the first-place trophy was awarded to the rookie girl group A2O LITE, who promoted with "NEON." The controversy began during a brief greeting scene captured on stage right after the winner was announced.
At the time, A2O LITE member Rada bowed toward Jang Wonyoung, who was standing nearby. Jang Wonyoung looked at Rada, gave a short nod, and then clapped. As a video edited to show only this specific moment circulated online, Jang Wonyoung's expression and manner of responding came under scrutiny. Some netizens criticized her, claiming she did not respond sufficiently to the greeting, with one user pointing out that her attitude seemed "too arrogant."
However, counterarguments followed, stating it is difficult to judge the entire situation from only partial clips. The original video captures Jang Wonyoung looking toward Rada, moving her head, and then offering applause. Based on the available footage, it is difficult to conclude that Jang Wonyoung ignored the greeting. Some pointed out that it is excessive to interpret a momentary expression or gesture as a matter of character or attitude.
As the controversy spread, the fan account of Rada, who first shared the video, released a direct statement. On the 23rd, the account emphasized, "There is absolutely no reason to spread hatred over a simple interaction," adding, "Jang Wonyoung did nothing wrong. Neither of them deserves to be treated this way." The account further urged people to refrain from unnecessary attacks, stating they would block users who continue to criticize either side. This served as a warning against the situation where a brief interaction between the parties turned into online criticism directed at both.
This is not the first time Jang Wonyoung has been surrounded by attitude controversies. In July, her appearance with crossed arms at an amusement park was raised as an issue online, and later, criticism was raised when a scene of her receiving a passport with one hand during airport immigration was circulated. However, it was later pointed out that she was judging the situation based on partial footage when videos filmed from different angles confirmed she received the passport with both hands.
A controversy regarding tardiness that arose in January followed a similar pattern. While allegations were made that Jang Wonyoung was late to an event, the controversy was settled when it was confirmed she had arrived at the venue early and was waiting. These successive instances show how the everyday actions of a celebrity can lead to evaluations different from the actual situation when they spread online through short videos and limited context.
Of course, for a star receiving public attention, every action on and off stage can be subject to evaluation. However, concluding that someone ignored another or is arrogant based solely on a brief expression or gesture is a separate matter. Especially in an online environment where edited videos spread faster than the originals, voices are calling for an attitude of checking the full situation before criticizing and distinguishing between confirmed facts and personal interpretations.
The public eye follows Jang Wonyoung strictly, given her glamorous stage presence and high popularity. However, it remains to be seen whether expanding minor moments into controversies is justified public interest or a phenomenon of applying excessive moral standards to celebrities. IVE is scheduled to officially release the mini-album "Looks Can Kill" on the 26th. Attention is focused on whether Jang Wonyoung can move past this renewed controversy and concentrate on her stage activities for the new song.
Some are also raising questions regarding Jang Wonyoung's musicality and vocal ability in relation to her level of recognition and popularity within IVE.
