Kim Ji-won Displays Genius Abilities in the Operating Room Despite Desperate Circumstances
Actress Kim Ji-won has captivated viewers with her eccentric behavior and overwhelming surgical skills. Despite her desperate situation—having a monthly allowance of only 100,000 won and her passport being managed by someone else—she transforms into an incomparable genius doctor whenever she stands before an operating table. In the new SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia', Kim Ji-won plays Gye Su-jeong, who leaves a strong initial impression by subverting the traditional cold doctor character with her quirkiness and unrivaled skill. In the second episode of 'Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia' broadcast on the 10th, Gye Su-jeong's hidden past and fearless activities unfolded simultaneously. The work, which started with an 11.4% viewership rating in its first broadcast, continued to draw viewers' attention in the second episode through Kim Ji-won's characterful acting and fast-paced development. In particular, Gye Su-jeong's actions, which lightly bypass common sense and hierarchy, created a refreshing reversal within the strict organization of the hospital. Unresolved wounds resided in Gye Su-jeong's past. After waking up from a nightmare where she runs into a burning building after leaving the words, "Wait, I'll bring your brother out," to a young child, she continued her cheerful and eccentric daily life as if nothing were wrong. While she is a person who is unpredictable on a regular basis, a trauma that cannot be easily revealed is hidden behind that facade. Not only her extraordinary abilities as a genius doctor, but also what kind of past she passed through to become the person she is today, have emerged as important observation points for the future of the drama. Gye Su-jeong's seemingly irrational behavior began on a bus. After eating a boiled egg that another female student had rejected by reaching out from the back seat, he (she) carried the female student, Lee Ju-hee, to the hospital without hesitation when she suddenly collapsed. Upon arriving at the hospital, she even forcibly took the wheelchair of Chairman Park Gwang-cheol, a VIP patient, and rushed to the emergency patient. It was an action that prioritized the patient who needed to be saved immediately over hospital hierarchy and patient status. While it may seem rude and impulsive, it was also a scene that clearly showed what takes priority in a moment where lives are at stake. The relationship with intern Park Tae-gyeong (played by Kim Woo-seok), who began to closely monitor Gye Su-jeong, added more interest. To Park Tae-gyeong, who bought her dessert at a cafe, Gye Su-jeong confessed that she owes a debt to Director Jang Hui-suk (played by Lee Jung-eun) and lives on a monthly allowance of 100,000 won. The explanation that she had already spent all her allowance and could not buy anything to eat, and that even her passport is kept by Director Jang, is hard to believe as the daily life of a genius doctor. Unlike her outstanding medical abilities, her private life shows significantly limited economic and personal autonomy. What debt Gye Su-jeong owes to Director Jang and why their relationship is so complexly intertwined will be revealed in the future. Gye Su-jeong's personality was also clearly revealed in the conflict surrounding Lee Ju-hee's surgery. When she proposed a new surgical method, fellow doctors all opposed it, but Seonam Hospital Director Bu Seung-gwon (played by Son Hyun-joo) supported her, saying, "The surgery will be performed by Dr. Gye Su-jeong." To the patient's family, who were anxious and refusing the surgery, Gye Su-jeong said, "Everyone dies. Decide. Do you want to die in a month, or in a hundred years?" Although the expression was cold and direct, it was a way of confronting the situation where decisions cannot be delayed in order to save a life. It is far from the typical image of a doctor who carefully soothes the fears of patients and their families, but Gye Su-jeong's unique, unrestrained way of speaking heightened the tension of the drama. At the end of the broadcast, Gye Su-jeong's true value exploded. As Chairman Park Gwang-cheol's surgery, which was being performed by Do Yun-sik (played by Kim Yeong-min), hit a hurdle due to cancer metastasis, leading to a declaration of abandoning the surgery, Bu Seung-gwon urgently called Gye Su-jeong, who was performing Lee Ju-hee's surgery. Although Park Tae-gyeong blocked her, asking, "Are you a doctor who only cares about money?", Gye Su-jeong headed to another operating room leaving only the short words, "Priority." The surprising fact was that she had already successfully completed Lee Ju-hee's surgery in about one hour. Gye Su-jeong then went on to perform Chairman Park's surgery consecutively, overturning the crisis. The scene of performing two high-difficulty surgeries in a row was a moment that instantly showed why she is an extraordinary doctor. The fun presented by 'Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia' does not lie simply in a genius doctor successfully performing seemingly impossible surgeries. In situations where the patient's status, medical staff hierarchy, and organizational interests clash within the hospital, Gye Su-jeong prioritizes the patient's life and her own judgment over the existing order. Of course, while the dramatic surgery scenes do not directly represent the complex decision-making process of actual medical sites, it catches the eye by posing a question about what should be taken as the top priority in an organization that deals with lives. Kim Ji-won is bringing out the charm of the character by expressing the duality of Gye Su-jeong, who is prickly yet eccentric, unstable in daily life but more confident than anyone in the operating room. The story of having a monthly allowance of 100,000 won and having to entrust even her passport to someone else stimulates curiosity, and her surgical skills that flip the script in every crisis provide a sense of catharsis. With the identity of her past trauma and the debt owed to Director Jang Hui-suk still shrouded in mystery, attention is focused on what kind of incidents Gye Su-jeong will encounter in the future. It is noted whether Kim Ji-won, who has displayed a powerful presence from the beginning, can create another representative character through 'Doctor X'.
