Lee Soo-young to Temporarily Suspend 9-Year DJ Career to Care for Son with Leukemia
Singer Lee Soo-young is taking a break from her nearly 9-year tenure as a radio DJ to care for her son, who has been diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia.
Singer Lee Soo-young is stepping away from her radio DJ position, which she has held for nearly 9 years. The reason for her sudden disappearance from the airwaves was her son's illness. As her son was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia and hospitalized ahead of the Chuseok holiday, Lee Soo-young ultimately chose to stay by her child's side rather than continue broadcasting.
On the 5th, during the CBS Music FM program 'Let's Meet at 12', Lee Soo-young personally revealed the reason why she had been absent from the DJ seat. She spoke cautiously, saying, "I think everyone must have been puzzled because I wasn't heard without any word after Chuseok passed." She continued, "Before the Chuseok holiday, my child suddenly became ill, and while undergoing tests at the hospital, he was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia and was hospitalized."
The shock she must have felt as a mother in the face of such a sudden diagnosis must have been significant. However, while sharing her son's condition, Lee Soo-young instead spoke of how proud she is of him. She said, "He has started treatment now and is enduring it very hard," adding, "Although difficult tests and treatments are continuing at such a young age, the child is enduring them so bravely and admirably that even I, his mother, am surprised."
She also mentioned that she herself is enduring each day by her child's side. Lee Soo-young shared, "Watching him from beside him, I am also trying to pull myself together and strive to endure each day well together." For her, who has always shown a bright image on stage and in broadcasts, a time has come to fully handle being a mother rather than a singer or DJ.
Ultimately, she has placed a brief comma in her DJ activities that have continued for 9 years. Lee Soo-young explained that she decided to take a break from hosting 'Let's Meet at 12' for the time being, stating, "The expected treatment period is very long, and especially in the beginning, intensive chemotherapy continues, creating a situation where I cannot take my eyes off the child for even a moment." Although it is a decision to leave the familiar seat where she met listeners every day, what is most important to her right now is her son's treatment, not broadcasting.
After debuting in 1999 with her 1st album 'I Believe', Lee Soo-young established herself as a representative female ballad singer, leaving behind numerous hit songs such as 'La La La' and 'All Alone'. In particular, she has communicated with listeners for about 9 years since taking over as the DJ for 'Let's Meet at 12' in October 2017. She has been loved for a long time, showing another charm on the radio with her characteristic witty talk and warm empathy.
CBS announcer Chae Seon-a will temporarily fill the vacancy left by Lee Soo-young. While it has not been decided when she will pick up the microphone again, there is currently only one most important goal for Lee Soo-young: watching her son's treatment and recovery by his side rather than returning to broadcasting. As Lee Soo-young, who has comforted listeners' days for a long time, now pauses broadcasting for her most precious family member, support from fans is expected to continue.
