Women's national gymnastics athlete Wayne has revealed her honest feelings regarding her small height. Her height of 135cm was once a concern bordering on a complex, but she stated that rather than forcing changes to a physical condition that is directly linked to her performance, she now thinks it would be better to grow after her career as an athlete ends. She has come to understand her small build not just as a weakness, but in conjunction with the characteristics of her sport and her own body.

Wayne appeared on tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' broadcast on the 6th, revealing her journey as a gymnast and her thoughts on her physique. Wayne rose to the top by winning the gold medal in the women's balance beam at the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026. She is also the protagonist of the process in which Korean gymnastics won a gold medal on the women's balance beam for the first time in 40 years.

Recalling the time her daughter was born, Wayne's mother said, "She was born with a body size of 42cm and 3.09kg." Compared to her younger sibling, who was born at 54cm, Wayne was also on the smaller side during her growth process. Although she lived in an environment where she had no choice but to be conscious of her physical condition from a young age, Wayne began to accept those conditions in a different way.

In particular, an anecdote revealed by her mother well demonstrates Wayne's attitude. When she received an offer to appear on a broadcast during middle school, Wayne reportedly said, "Since I am short, I will appear when I am noticed for being good at sports rather than being noticed as an athlete who is just noticed because of her height." It meant she wanted to be evaluated by her performance rather than simply becoming famous. Yoo Jae-suk also expressed admiration upon hearing this.

Height had been a long-standing concern for Wayne. She spoke candidly, saying, "In the past, I also thought I wished I could grow a bit." However, her thoughts changed as she continued her career as an athlete. This is because gymnastics is a sport where various factors such as body length, weight, sense of balance, rotation, and landing affect technical execution, meaning sudden physical changes can also be a variable in performance.

Wayne said, "If physical changes come too drastically, the techniques change again," and "These days, I think a lot about just continuing with this body without much significant physical change and then growing after I retire." This does not mean she is rejecting growth itself, but rather that she is naturally accepting her body while maintaining her current physical condition and performance as an athlete.

This also touches upon the unique reality experienced by elite athletes in their growth period. Generally, growth during adolescence is accepted as a natural process from the perspective of health and development, but for athletes where performance is crucial, physical changes can sometimes lead to changes in technique and movement. Therefore, what is needed for an athlete is not simply possessing a specific physical condition, but managing both performance and health as their body undergoes changes.

Above all, Wayne showed from an early age that she wants to be remembered as an athlete for her skill rather than an athlete who receives attention because of her height. The number 135cm is just one piece of information describing her physical characteristics and cannot replace her entire performance that created a gold medal on the balance beam. This is why the story of this 16-year-old athlete, who moved beyond concerns about her small build to understand her body and her sport and ultimately proved her name through skill, feels even more meaningful.
