Chef Jung Ji-sun Fails Final Mission on 'Undercover Chef': 'Taste is Good, but Not Authentic Sichuan Cuisine'

Renowned Chinese cuisine expert Jung Ji-sun faces an unexpected defeat in the final mission of tvN's 'Undercover Chef' after local chefs in Chengdu critique her dishes.

The 'Empress of Chinese Cuisine,' renowned chef Jung Ji-sun, has delivered a shocking result following an unexpected failure in her final mission. Although she drew praise for her exceptional cooking skills and creative menu, the standards set by the local chefs in Chengdu proved to be a different challenge altogether. The tension in the 'Undercover Chef' program reached its peak as evaluations fluctuated between the completeness of taste and culinary authenticity.

Chung Ji-sun nhận thất bại tại 'Culinary Class Wars': 'Vị rất ngon nhưng không phải món Tứ Xuyên chính thống'

In the episode of the tvN variety program 'Undercover Chef' broadcast on the 23rd, star chefs including Sam Kim, Jung Ji-sun, and Kwon Seong-jun were shown working undercover in overseas restaurants, hiding their identities to be evaluated by local kitchens.

On this day, Jung Ji-sun worked at a restaurant in Chengdu, China, under the pseudonym 'Sunny,' performing the role of the youngest member of the local kitchen staff. Reaching her final day, she entered the final mission to prove her capabilities by developing a new menu.

The direction chosen by Jung Ji-sun focused on the spicy flavor, which is a core element of Sichuan cuisine. Utilizing the intense aroma of Lao Gan Ma (chili oil), she completed three dishes: a spicy tomato vermicelli soup, stir-fried mushrooms with chili soy sauce, and shredded pork with mustard greens (Huang Fucai Yukseul).

Her swift hand movements, precise cooking process, and menu composition—which added new combinations to familiar ingredients—drew admiration from the chefs on site. In particular, the staff members could not stop eating after tasting the food, and the overall atmosphere remained positive.

However, the final evaluation was unexpected.

A grandmother chef from the local restaurant appeared to taste the dishes personally, and both the male and female owners also provided cautious evaluations. The female owner expressed satisfaction after tasting the stir-fried mushrooms with chili soy sauce, saying, "It suits my palate," and the grandmother also gave a positive response.

However, regarding the shredded pork with mustard greens, the male owner pointed out, "The seasoning is a bit disappointing.'

Following this, Jung Ji-sun asked with a tense expression, "Among these three dishes, is there any that can actually be sold to real customers?" At the moment when everyone expected a positive answer, the local chefs' response was unexpected.

The male owner gave a cold evaluation, stating, "The dishes Sunny made today were not authentic Sichuan cuisine," adding, "There are lacking parts by local standards."

The grandmother also shared the same opinion, resulting in the failure of Jung Ji-sun's final mission.

This was not simply a matter of taste. Even for a world-renowned chef, the barrier of local food culture and tradition was a standard that could not be easily overcome. While the creative interpretation shown by Jung Ji-sun certainly received high marks, there was regret that it fell short of the 'Sichuan-ness' expected by the locals in Chengdu.

Watching the results, MC Kim Pung and the other chefs could not hide their surprise at the unexpected twist. In particular, chef Kwon Seong-jun's reaction, "Ah! It's a failure! Then what happens to the program?" drew laughter from the onlookers.

This mission demonstrated the fact that even with the fame and skill of a famous chef, it is difficult to fully persuade the long-standing palate and traditions of a local region. Jung Ji-sun's challenge, which took place between tradition and creation, familiarity and novelty, remains one of the most interesting questions posed by 'Undercover Chef.'
