'Agent Kim Reactivated' So Ji-sub, Beyond Action to Paternal Love: 'The Dad with Smelly Feet'

'Agent Kim Reactivated' has drawn its curtain on a massive espionage action saga, ultimately bidding farewell to viewers with its warmest story: 'The Return of a Father.'

In the final episode of the SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'Agent Kim Reactivated,' which aired on the 25th, Kim Bu-jang (played by So Ji-sub) carries out his final mission, settling all the ill-fated connections surrounding him, and returns to an ordinary daily life with his daughter, Kim Min-ji (played by Seo Soo-min).

At the beginning of the series, Kim Bu-jang appeared to be just an 'ordinary man wearing glasses,' but he was actually a person with a more intense past than anyone else. However, what the drama focused on until the very end was not his flashy combat skills or national missions. The single value he sought to protect until the end was the name of 'Father.'

In the final episode, Kim Bu-jang carried out a final operation alongside Sung Han-soo (played by Choi Dae-hoon) and Park Jin-cheol (played by Yoon Kyung-ho). The three men made life-threatening choices during the process of reclaiming Ri Eung-ryeong (played by Lee Jae-yong), and in that process, they encountered Park Kang-sung (played by Kim Sung Kyu).

To Park Kang-sung, who aimed his gun at Ri Eung-ryeong to avenge his brother, Kim Bu-jang offered an unexpected answer.

“I failed to protect your brother.”

Admitting his own failure, Kim Bu-jang persuaded Park Kang-sung, saying, “It is more important to protect precious people than to kill an enemy.” In that moment, what Kim Bu-jang chose was protection, not revenge. Instead of repeating the wounds of the past, he chose the path of protecting someone's life.

This was also the message that permeated the entire work of 'Agent Kim Reactivated.' Although Kim Bu-jang fought numerous enemies throughout the drama, his greatest battle was ultimately the guilt and sense of loss remaining within himself. And in the final moment, he was completed not as a person who takes revenge, but as a person who protects those he loves.

Even after the incident surrounding Ri Eung-ryeong was concluded, Kim Bu-jang's choices continued. He handed Ri Eung-ryeong over to Park Kang-sung, and Park Kang-sung chose a new path, leaving behind the words, “Live well with your daughter. I will survive too.”

The punishment of Joo Kang-chan (played by Joo Sang-wook), who was another axis of evil, was also portrayed satisfyingly. Joo Kang-chan, who pressured Kim Bu-jang by taking the children of Sung Han-soo and Park Jin-cheol hostage, eventually crumbled before Kim Bu-jang's wits. The three men escaped from a desperate crisis, and Kim Bu-jang completed his final revenge of bringing down Ju Hak Construction with the help of Seon-saeng (played by Song Kyung-cheol).

However, the true moment of emotion came after the massive incident ended.

Kim Bu-jang, who had been processed as deceased, met his daughter Min-ji again in front of his own funerary urn. And he spoke quietly.

“I'm home.”

More difficult than dangerous missions that flirt with death was the task of returning to his daughter. The sight of the father and daughter starting anew with a new house and a new name was a scene that proved all the reasons Kim Bu-jang had fought for.

In particular, Min-ji's final narration was a decisive moment that showed why 'Agent Kim Reactivated' was loved.

“All the fathers in the world must be ordinary people. People whose feet smell sometimes when they come home from work. My dad is also just an ordinary middle-aged man.”

To his daughter, he was not a hero who fought for the nation or a legendary agent, but simply an ordinary dad with smelly feet after work. This scene accurately explained the character of Kim Bu-jang while completing the theme of family that the work held onto until the end.

So Ji-sub convincingly completed the character of Kim Bu-jang by oscillating between cold action and restrained emotional acting. The paternal love hidden behind his taciturn expression and his human side that crumbled only in front of his daughter created a new father character different from existing action heroes.

Choi Dae-hoon as Sung Han-soo and Yoon Kyung-ho as Park Jin-cheol also maintained the balance of the drama. Even amidst tension-filled incidents, the two completed the unique color of the work, known as the 'Dad Universe,' with their characteristic cheerful energy.

In the final scene, Kim Bu-jang appeared to imply another mission at a new workplace, leaving the possibility of a Season 2. The scene where he engages in combat action instead of a typical interview was an ending that simultaneously showcased the unique humor and action sense of 'Agent Kim Reactivated.'

In the subsequent post-credits video, the images of a young Kim Bu-jang, Sung Han-soo, and Park Jin-cheol from their Cheonsan Unit days in 2006 were revealed. By showing that the three have been connected since the past, it left expectations for another story.

Ultimately, the final answer chosen by 'Agent Kim Reactivated' was not a grand heroic narrative. It is harder to be a person who returns to their family than to be a person who saves the world. And the best dad is not a perfect person, but sometimes an ordinary man with smelly feet.
