Twice's Chaeyoung denies indoor smoking allegations

Twice's Chaeyoung has directly addressed sudden allegations regarding indoor smoking. As the controversy spread based solely on a scene from a short, edited video, she clarified the facts and corrected the misunderstanding via a fan platform.

On the 12th, Chaeyoung spoke out on the fan platform regarding the recent smoking allegations, stating, "I was just going to stay quiet, but people are talking about cigarettes too much, so I am mentioning it." She emphasized, "It is not a cigarette; I am drinking a beverage. Look closely."

She expressed her discomfort, adding, "It is very exhausting. I am just having fun." She reiterated her clarification, saying, "Doesn't it make no sense? With so many people around, would I do that openly? I am not that thoughtless of a person."

The controversy began with a video that spread primarily through online communities. The video captured Chaeyoung indoors appearing to hold something in her hand and bringing it to her mouth, leading some netizens to speculate it was a cigarette and raise allegations of indoor smoking.

The video is known to have been filmed when Chaeyoung attended the FKA twigs rave party held at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul. However, the controversy grew as speculations about what the object in the video actually was spread first, and the situation is now settling as Chaeyoung personally explained, "It is not a cigarette, but a beverage."

This controversy draws attention as an instance where a single scene from a short video was defined as a specific act before the context and facts could be verified. In particular, as the practice of speculating a person's actions based only on parts of a video repeats online, it is difficult to avoid criticism that speculative judgments preceded fact-checking in this case as well.

While expressing fatigue over the misunderstandings directed at her, Chaeyoung took active steps to resolve the situation by explaining the circumstances directly to her fans.
