Christopher Nolan: 'Interstellar' success drove my first visit to Korea

Director Christopher Nolan reveals why he personally pushed for his first trip to Korea, citing the deep connection with fans following 'Interstellar'.

Director Christopher Nolan has revealed the reason he personally pushed for his first visit to Korea. To him, Korea was not merely an overseas market to promote his new work, but a country where audiences have shown special affection for his films.

Christopher Nolan: 'The success of Interstellar was decisive for my first visit to Korea'

On the tvN variety show "You Quiz on the Block" broadcast on the 12th, director Christopher Nolan and lead actor Matt Damon appeared to share a conversation with Yoo Jae Suk.

Welcoming the two, Yoo Jae Suk greeted them by saying, "It is an honor to have you here."

Nolan responded, "To the Korean fans, it is an honor to be in Korea," while Matt Damon also expressed gratitude for the warm welcome from Korean audiences, stating, "I am happy to greet you all through 'Odyssey'."

In particular, the focus of interest on this day was Nolan's first visit to Korea.

When Yoo Jae Suk brought up the topic that Nolan had actively pushed for this visit, he acknowledged it. Nolan explained that the reactions shown by Korean audiences since his films began releasing in Korea several years ago were impressive.

Among them, the decisive work was "Interstellar."

Nolan mentioned the intense interest from Korean audiences, saying, "'Interstellar' was watched very many times in Korea." He continued, "That is why I really wanted to meet the fans in Korea in person and introduce my work. I have finally fulfilled that wish."

For Nolan, Korean audiences meant more than just overseas viewers consuming his films. In particular, "Interstellar" is a representative case showing how strongly his cinematic world was embraced by domestic audiences through its long-term box office success in Korea following its release.

This point also aligns with Nolan's cinematic style. In works such as "Inception," "Interstellar," and "Tenet," he has combined grand questions like time and space, memory and perception, and the limits of human existence with visual spectacle. Because of this, his works possess a unique power that goes beyond simple entertainment, prompting audiences to re-interpret and discuss the film after watching it.

The fact that Nolan's films have gained particularly strong vitality in Korea is not unrelated to these characteristics. The audience culture of not just watching a movie once, but watching it multiple times to revisit scenes and dialogue and to interpret the scientific and philosophical concepts within the work, has found a perfect match with Nolan's films.

It seems that this reaction from Korean audiences was also quite impressive to Nolan. Beyond the simple fact that the box office numbers were high, a major reason for this first visit to Korea was his desire to personally meet the audience who takes his films seriously and actively interprets them.

Coincidentally, this was also the release date of "Odyssey." When Yoo Jae Suk said, "I have already booked a ticket to go and see it this week," Nolan reacted with delight, saying, "Excellent, excellent," drawing laughter.

Although it was a meeting between a world-renowned master and Korea's representative national MC mediated by a single film, the most impressive part of the conversation was unexpectedly humble.

The reason Nolan, who has presented his films in numerous countries, specifically wanted his first visit to Korea was to personally confirm the love Korean audiences have sent to his films and to introduce his movies directly to those audiences.

Ultimately, this visit to Korea is less a simple promotional schedule for a new work and more a moment where the relationship between the director and the audience, which has been maintained through the screen for a long time, meets in reality for the first time. Attention is focused on what kind of new trajectory the special connection between Korea and Nolan, which began with "Interstellar," will create through "Odyssey".
