Broadcaster Han Seok-jun reveals terrifying fainting accident at home
Han Seok-jun shares details of a sudden loss of consciousness caused by orthostatic hypotension that led to a severe head injury.
Broadcaster Han Seok-jun revealed a terrifying accident from last year when he suddenly lost consciousness at home and suffered a major head injury. During an otherwise normal morning, his memory cut out the moment he stood up from his bed, and when he regained consciousness, he found himself collapsed on the floor. Medical examinations confirmed that the cause of the fainting was orthostatic hypotension.

On the 5th, Han appeared on JTBC's 'Knowing Bros' alongside Jang Young-ran, Shin Gi-ru, and Hwang Jae-gyun. During the episode, the cast played a game to find the lie among three anecdotes shared by Han, during which he mentioned an experience where he personally rescued someone who had fainted at a book launch event.
In the process, Seo Jang-hoon joked that Han was likely exaggerating a story because he had once collapsed somewhere in the past. In response, Han brought up his actual experience of losing consciousness at home last year and explained the situation in detail.
He stated that he was sitting on the edge of his bed in the morning and stood up to turn off some music, at which point his memory vanished. When he regained consciousness, he was lying on the floor, feeling as though he had simply fallen back asleep on the ground. He added that the situation was even more frightening because he felt no warning symptoms at the time.
The impact of the accident did not end with a simple fainting spell. His wife, woken by the loud noise caused by his fall, discovered him, and because he hit his head, there was significant bleeding. Recalling the situation, Han said, "My head was completely covered in blood truly.""
He explained that even after regaining consciousness immediately after the accident, it was difficult to properly perceive the situation. He had previously shared on SNS that he "suddenly collapsed at home with a gap in memory," noting that it was difficult to tell if he had actually woken up because his wife had shaken him.
Due to the heavy bleeding from his head and his inability to speak properly, Han was eventually transported to the emergency room. At the hospital, he underwent tests, including brain imaging, and received treatment for the lacerations. Subsequent medical results confirmed that the sudden loss of consciousness was due to orthostatic hypotension.
Orthostatic hypotension refers to a condition where blood pressure drops sharply when standing up after sitting or lying down. When a posture changes suddenly, gravity causes blood to pool relatively more in the lower body; if the body fails to sufficiently compensate for the blood pressure and blood flow, symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, or weakness can occur, and in severe cases, it can lead to a temporary loss of consciousness. In particular, the secondary accidents caused by falling and injuring the head or body can be more problematic than the fainting itself.
However, not everyone with orthostatic hypotension will faint, and if loss of consciousness occurs repeatedly, it is necessary to differentiate it from other cardiovascular or neurological causes. Since Han is a case where the cause was confirmed after hospital testing, it is important not to arbitrarily judge sudden fainting as mere fatigue or anemia.
Han has recovered his health following the accident and has continued his broadcasting activities. Having joined KBS in 2003 as a 29th recruitment open announcer, he was recognized for his stable hosting skills through news and educational programs. After leaving KBS in 2015, he expanded his field of activity as a freelance broadcaster.
Particularly true to his background as an announcer, he has worked across variety and educational programs, utilizing his strength in precise language and calm hosting. While the accident revealed on 'Knowing Bros' may seem like a simple personal episode, it serves as a warning that loss of consciousness can occur without notice even in moments of ordinary daily life, potentially leading to serious physical trauma.
For Han, last year's accident is a thing of the past, but the experience of waking up on the floor with a complete gap in memory is a moment that cannot be easily forgotten. Having returned to daily life after recovering his health, he now shares the story with a hint of laughter on television, but behind it lies a harrowing day that required his family's swift discovery and emergency room treatment.
