Kang Ji-young to join 'Office Workers' Season 3 for comedy challenge

Kang Ji-young, a broadcaster and former JTBC announcer, is joining the Coupang Play original variety show 'Office Workers' Season 3 as a new cast member. Following her transition to freelance work last year, she has continued to work across current affairs, culture, and entertainment; now, she is embarking on a new transformation by tackling the office comedy genre.

Kang's addition carries more significance than a simple variety show appearance. As she takes on an 'office worker' character approximately one year after leaving JTBC, expectations are high that her background as a former announcer who experienced the organizational culture of a major broadcasting station will enhance the realism of the content.

'Office Workers' is an office situation variety show set in 'DY Planning,' a small-to-medium-sized marketing company in crisis. The show portrays the conflicts, negotiations, and daily struggles of employees and clients through a comedic lens.

Season 1, released last February, received praise for meticulously reflecting the language and organizational culture of real office workers despite its exaggerated settings, drawing significant empathy from the working professional viewership.

The program has created realistic yet satirical humor centered around Shin Dong Yup, who plays the CEO of DY Planning, alongside Kim Min-kyo, Lee Su-ji, Hyun Bong-sik, Kim Won-hun, Ji Ye-eun, Cha Jung-won, and STAYC's Yoon, who play characters with various ranks and personalities.

In Season 2, actor Bek Hyunjin joined as a new department manager, portraying power dynamics and generational conflicts within the organization in a multi-dimensional way. In Season 3, Kang will join as a new member, expected to create fresh relationships and narratives.

Kang first made her name to the public through the MBC variety program 'Our Night - New Employee' in 2011, and joined JTBC as a specially recruited announcer later that same year.

Since then, she has demonstrated broad hosting capabilities by moving between current affairs, culture, and entertainment programs such as 'Political Department Meeting,' 'Ssulzun Live,' 'Difference Class,' and 'Extreme Tour.'

In particular, she was recognized for her interview and news hosting skills while serving as a weekend anchor for JTBC's 'Newsroom,' earning viewers' trust with her calm yet logical hosting style.

Since transitioning to freelance work last April, she has further expanded her professional scope.

She has showcased both her variety skills and intellectual image by appearing in Netflix's 'The Devil's Plan: Death Room,' JTBC's 'Histrick,' KBS 2TV's 'Problem Child in House,' and MBC's 'Radio Star.'

Furthermore, in January, she signaled a full-scale expansion of her broadcasting activities by signing an exclusive contract with TN Entertainment, which includes Lee Young Ja, Kim Sook, and Hong Jin-kyung.

Recently, there has been a prominent trend in the broadcasting industry where talent from announcer backgrounds are expanding their scope beyond news and culture programs into variety shows, content production, and digital platforms. This phenomenon reflects the changing role of traditional broadcasters from mere information deliverers to 'content players with personality and narrative.'

Kang is being evaluated as building a new model for broadcasters by proving her variety-show appeal alongside her accurate delivery and intellectual image.

Interest is mounting to see what kind of realism and humor a former announcer who has experienced actual corporate life will bring to her role as an 'office worker' in this comedy.

The Coupang Play original 'Office Workers' Season 3, featuring Kang, is scheduled to be released this August.
