Lee Na-yeon faces backlash over joke about JTBC's struggles

"Is JTBC in trouble? The air conditioning isn't working." Lee Na-yeon, a JTBC sports announcer and reporter, has faced unexpected backlash following a vlog in which she commented on the company's current situation. Her joke about the air conditioning has drawn criticism as being insensitive given the company's ongoing management difficulties.

Recently, Lee released a vlog on her YouTube channel 'Ildan Na-yeon NAYEON' capturing her daily routine commuting to JTBC.

In the video description, she shared her emotional state, writing, "As I lived my life doing my best in the tasks given to me, the company suddenly went bankrupt," adding, "I felt a bit depressed thinking about whether I would be able to work again if I were to leave the company."

She continued, "It's not that the company is closing down immediately, but it feels like I'm heading toward the end of a dream. Still, I believe another opportunity to do what I do well will arise, so I am contemplating my second future."

The controversy stems from a specific scene in the video.

After finishing an online Chinese class at the JTBC headquarters, Lee began by asking, "Is it okay to say this?" before smiling and saying, "Maybe it's because the company is having a hard time, but the air conditioning isn't working. It's so hot."

She then added jokingly, "I won't get fired for saying this, right?" while the caption 'Not unemployed yet...!' appeared on the screen.

Following the video's release, mixed reactions emerged online.

Some netizens felt the comment was not a major issue, saying, "It's a joke that can be taken lightly" and "She was just speaking honestly about the company's reality."

On the other hand, a significant number of viewers expressed critical reactions, stating, "It wasn't something an influential person should say publicly while the company is in a difficult situation," "She should have thought about the employees working together," "Even as a joke, it was a comment that could affect the company's image," and "She should have considered the impact of her words."

In particular, some pointed out, "Is it appropriate to use professional life as personal content material?" and "Considering the position of the employees undergoing corporate rehabilitation procedures, it could appear reckless."

The controversy is gaining more attention as it coincides with JTBC's recent management crisis.

JTBC declared default last June after failing to repay 20.6 billion won in securitized borrowings. Subsequently, along with affiliates of the JoongAng Group, it applied for corporate rehabilitation procedures in court and is currently proceeding with steps to normalize management.

As criticisms arose that Lee's remarks could be seen as caricaturing the company's reality under these circumstances, the controversy has spread.

Lee began her broadcasting career as a JTBC golf announcer in 2021 and gained public recognition after appearing on the TVING dating reality show 'EXchange 2' in 2022. She currently balances broadcasting, YouTube, and influencer activities.
