New mysteries emerge in 100 Days of Deception as second act begins
The tvN weekend drama '100 Days of Deception' is entering its second act, revealing major twists involving Lee Ga-gyeong's identity as a spy and the hidden family connections of Lee Ae-yeong.
The tvN drama 100 Days of Deception enters its second act on the 7th, with the National Salvation Corps planning a large-scale assassination mission at the Gisonggwan commemorative banquet. As Lee Ga-gyeong attempts to complete her mission, the emergence of a pawn shop receipt bearing the name Shin Tae-jin adds a new layer of mystery to Lee Ae-yeong's past.
As '100 Days of Deception' enters its latter half, the series is signaling increasingly complex character relationships alongside massive plot twists. In particular, the past of Lee Ae-yeong (Song Ji-hyo), who has been revealed as the biological mother of Lee Ga-gyeong (Kim You-jung) and the adoptive mother of Kim Tae-ung (Park Jin-young), has emerged as the central mystery. Viewers are left questioning why she abandoned her young daughter and what secrets lie behind her marriage to Sato Shinichi (Jin Seon-kyu). Furthermore, the appearance of an unidentified name, 'Shin Tae-jin,' has sparked a surge of speculation among the audience.
The production team for the tvN 20th anniversary special weekend drama '100 Days of Deception' (directed by Yoo In-sik and Kim Yun-jin, written by Ryu Bo-ri) released key points to watch for the second half on the 5th. As the drama enters its second act starting with episode 9, which airs on the 7th, the survival story of Lee Ga-gyeong—who has infiltrated the Government-General of Korea disguised as an interpreter named Geum Seo-hee—is expected to enter a new phase.
Lee Ga-gyeong has been enduring precarious times within the Government-General of Korea while hiding her true identity. Following the death of Geum Seok-jung (Kam Woo-sung), Sato Shinichi's suspicions have deepened, and the crisis has escalated uncontrollably as he began investigating the Gyeam-ri incident from 13 years ago and Lee Ga-gyeong's past. Meanwhile, Lee Ga-gyeong and Kim Tae-ung (Park Jin-young) have been narrowing the emotional distance between them, sharing similar wounds despite their different circumstances.
Their relationship began with a chance meeting at Gyeongseong Station and led to a reunion at the Government-General of Korea. Despite lying to and suspecting one another, they gradually broke down their emotional barriers and finally began to reveal their hidden pasts and wounds. On the day Geum Seok-jung lost his life at the hands of Sato Shinichi, Lee Ga-gyeong wept in Kim Tae-ung's arms. Kim Tae-ung, who had also been struggling with his identity and affiliations, took a step closer by confessing his Korean name for the first time.
However, a secret remains between them that cannot be easily overlooked: Lee Ga-gyeong is a spy for the National Salvation Corps, targeting the life of Sato Shinichi. As they confirm their true feelings for each other, the secret they must hide becomes heavier, increasing the likelihood that they will be forced to choose between love and their mission. Their romance has become more precarious as the truth that could destroy their relationship threatens to emerge just as their emotions deepen.
Lee Ga-gyeong does not have much time left. Her initial spy activity period promised to Yoo So-ran (Kim Hyun-joo) was three months. Although she intended to quit and leave after finishing the interpretation for Geum Seok-jung's interrogation, she returned at the request of Yoo Philip (Lee Moo-saeng). Subsequently, a new agreement was made with Yoo So-ran to complete the operation within one month and send her to the United States. Now, Lee Ga-gyeong must complete the assassination mission of Sato Shinichi while protecting her identity until the end.
In particular, there is interest in whether Lee Ga-gyeong's long-held dream of going to the United States can be realized. Her dream of heading to the United States, which she etched in her heart while looking up at the world's tallest buildings from the lowest points of her life, is not merely about moving abroad, but is tied to the hope of escaping her current life to choose a new future. However, even if the spy mission succeeds, it is uncertain whether she can safely escape the Government-General of Korea.
The operation to assassinate Sato Shinichi has entered its third stage. The plan originally conceived by Yoo So-ran and the National Salvation Corps has expanded beyond targeting the life of a single individual, Sato Shinichi, into a large-scale undertaking intended to shake the entire Government-General of Korea. The stage for the operation is the commemorative banquet for the opening of Gisonggwan. Lee Ga-gyeong has already hidden a bomb inside the Government-General of Korea, which was brought in in advance through Kim Tae-ung's fiancée, Kim Myeong-nam (Park Jung-yeon).
A special pre-release video released on the 4th shows Yoo So-ran and members of the National Salvation Corps executing the operation ahead of the final battle. Yoo So-ran spoke with grim determination, saying, "The bomb will explode when the Governor-General proposes a toast," followed by shots of the members' resolute eyes as they hold their glasses just before the time bomb detonates. Expectations for the broadcast are rising as the scale and urgency of the situation are predicted to surpass the action and shooting scenes shown in the first and second operations.
Above all, the greatest point of interest in the latter half is the past of Lee Ae-yeong (Song Ji-hyo), which has been shrouded in mystery. As it was revealed that Lee Ae-yeong is the biological mother of Lee Ga-gyeong and the adoptive mother of Kim Tae-ung, the lives of these two characters, which previously seemed separate, have been tied together by a single link. The setting that Lee Ga-gyeong and Kim Tae-ung, who grew up in different environments, are actually connected through the same woman provides a powerful twist.
Attention is now focused on why Lee Ae-yeong left the young Lee Ga-gyeong and how she later became married to Sato Shinichi. Beyond a simple family history, it is a riddle to be solved regarding how Lee Ae-yeong's choices relate to the current events unfolding. In particular, a pawn shop receipt that Kim Tae-ung had kept while longing for his mother has emerged as a new clue.
The name written on the pawn shop receipt is 'Shin Tae-jin.' It remains unknown who this name refers to and how it relates to Lee Ae-yeong's past. Whether Lee Ga-gyeong and Kim Tae-ung can trace Lee Ae-yeong's movements through the receipt is another important point to watch in the latter half. As Lee Ae-yeong's past is revealed, the relationships surrounding the three individuals are likely to flow in unexpected directions.
Suspicion surrounding the identity of the spy, the precarious emotions of the two people drawn to each other, the large-scale bomb operation that will shake the Government-General of Korea, and the family secrets centered around Song Ji-hyo—'100 Days of Deception' embraces romance, espionage, and family mystery all at once as it enters its second half. From episode 9, airing on the 7th, viewers are focused on how Lee Ga-gyeong's fate and Lee Ae-yeong's hidden past will intertwine.
