A Love Other Than Yours debuts with 2.6% viewership rating
Seo Kang-joon and Ahn Eun-jin's new realistic melodrama 'A Love Other Than Yours' premieres on KBS 2TV with a 2.6% viewership rating.
KBS 2TV's weekend mini-series 'A Love Other Than Yours,' starring Seo Kang-joon and Ahn Eun-jin as a couple in a 10-year relationship, has made its debut with a viewership rating in the 2% range. While the drama sought to differentiate itself as a realistic melodrama by highlighting the boredom, cracks, and emergence of new emotions inherent in long-term relationships, its initial performance fell short of expectations based on viewership rating indicators.

According to the viewership rating research firm Nielsen Korea, 'A Love Other Than Yours,' which premiered on September 12, recorded a nationwide viewership rating of 2.6%. The story centers on Namgoong Ho (Seo Kang-joon) and Lee Mi-do (Ahn Eun-jin), who have been dating for 10 years, as they re-examine their relationship amidst the tension between marriage and breakup. As Han Tae-seung (Lee Joo-ahn) and Park Su-a (Jo Aram) join as new emotional variables, the relationships between the four individuals form a full-scale melodrama structure.
The core of this work lies in the fact that it deals with issues occurring after love has already progressed for a significant period, rather than the 'beginning of love' that romance dramas typically assume. A period of 10 years provides both excitement and stability, but conversely, the moment familiarity turns into emotional numbness, it can become a factor that threatens the relationship itself. 'A Love Other Than Yours' uses this exact point as the starting point for its melodrama.
The production team also defined the work as a 'realistic empathy melodrama.' In released stills and script reading materials, the emphasis was placed on how Namgoong Ho and Lee Mi-do have transitioned from the fresh early stages of dating to a familiar relationship where they lean on each other. Ultimately, the question this drama must solve is closer to 'Do you still love the person you have loved for a long time?' rather than 'Whom will you love?'
However, the premiere performance showed a clear gap compared to its predecessor. The previous work, 'The Husband,' started at 4.4% and continued an upward trend to record 8.5% in its final episode. Notably, 8.5% remains the highest viewership rating among KBS weekend mini-series since 2025.
Therefore, the 2.6% for 'A Love Other Than Yours' carries more meaning than just being a start that is 1.8 percentage points lower than its predecessor. It signifies that the momentum in connecting the viewership base for weekend mini-series, which KBS painstakingly built through its previous work, has hit a temporary brake.
Furthermore, the competition intensity in the weekend night drama market itself is formidable. The number one weekend drama on that day was the KBS 2TV weekend drama 'Love is Coming,' which recorded 15.3%. The final episode of the MBC Friday-Saturday drama 'The Killer Wife' aired on the same day, concluding with a double-digit viewership rating of 10.7%, while SBS's 'Flex X Cop 2' showed 7.2% and tvN's 'Four Hands' showed 4.2%.
These figures show that 'A Love Other Than Yours' is not merely underperforming compared to its predecessor within KBS, but is starting with a significant gap in a market where it must compete for the choices of viewers in the same time slot. In particular, a figure in the 2% range can be interpreted as a sign that the work's presence and buzzability have not yet fully translated into viewership ratings.
Of course, it is too early to judge the final success or failure of a work based solely on its premiere viewership rating. 'The Husband' also started at 4.4% and rose to 8.5%, and the fact that KBS weekend mini-series have recently shown a pattern of attracting viewers in the latter half rather than the beginning leaves certain possibilities for 'A Love Other Than Yours.'
Above all, 'A Love Other Than Yours' chose narrative devices different from typical youth romances. The long-term couple played by Seo Kang-joon and Ahn Eun-jin is at a stage where they already know each other's daily habits and emotional nuances intimately. In such a relationship, the moment a new person appears, it can trigger a self-verification of 'the reality of the emotions I believed were love' rather than a simple love triangle.
For Seo, this work also holds significance as an opportunity to reconfirm his presence in the romance genre following his military service. As Ahn is an actress who has shown strength in realistic emotional expression through various genres following 'Hospital Playlist,' the subtle emotional changes of the long-term couple created by the two actors are highly likely to determine the success or failure of the work.
In particular, a melodrama themed around long-term dating is more about how convincingly it captures small cracks occurring in daily life rather than dramatic events. While the excitement of early dating can be easily expressed through facial expressions and actions, the task of making viewers empathize with a state where a decade of intimacy, fatigue, lingering affection, and love coexist is much more difficult.
Because of this, the upward momentum following the premiere is more important than the initial rating. As new emotional variables enter the picture and the relationship between Namgoong Ho and Lee Mi-do shifts from 'familiar love' to 'love that must be chosen,' the fate of the drama will depend on how well it secures empathy from viewers.
Ultimately, the biggest hurdle 'A Love Other Than Yours' must overcome is not just its competitors. The key is how it reinterprets the familiar theme of 'love and breakup'—a subject viewers have consumed through countless dramas—using a fresh emotional language. While the 2.6% start is certainly disappointing, if the realism of the 10-year relationship setting and the emotional acting of Seo Kang-joon and Ahn Eun-jin align, there is still room to reverse the initial numbers.
