Cha Tae-hyun jokes Yoo Yeon Seok's Grand Prize chances are slim due to So Ji-sub

Actor Cha Tae-hyun teased Yoo Yeon Seok on SBS's 'Whenever Possible,' joking that So Ji-sub's hit 'Agent Kim Reactivated' makes the competition tough.

Actor Cha Tae-hyun praised Yoo Yeon Seok's acting skills but sparked laughter by naming So Ji-sub as the frontrunner for the year-end Grand Prize. While acknowledging the quality of the performances and individual achievements, Cha used humor to candidly describe the intense competitive landscape of the broadcasting industry.

Cha Tae-hyun on Year-End Awards: "Yoo Yeon-seok's chances are ruined by So Ji-sub's 'Kim Bu-jang'"

On the SBS variety program "Whenever Possible" broadcast on the 25th, Cha Tae-hyun and Jin Ki-joo appeared as guests and shared stories with MCs Yoo Jae Suk and Yoo Yeon Seok. During the broadcast, a conversation about the actors' recent projects and year-end award ceremonies unfolded, sparked by the connection between Jin Ki-joo and Yoo Yeon Seok.

Jin Ki-joo revealed that although she had never worked directly with Yoo Yeon Seok, they had primarily met at award ceremonies. Hearing this, Cha Tae-hyun brought up Yoo's recent work.

Cha highly praised Yoo's acting in the SBS drama "Phantom Lawyer," stating he thoroughly enjoyed it. "Yeon Seok did 'Phantom Lawyer' this year, and he acted so well that I really enjoyed watching it," he said.

However, the conversation, which seemed destined to end with praise, took a turn with Cha's signature blunt humor. He immediately caused laughter on set by saying, "Because of 'Agent Kim Reactivated,' he's out this year."

He went on to directly mention So Ji-sub, adding, "Ji-sub is definitely the Grand Prize winner. You just have extremely bad luck."

This was not a denial of Yoo's acting ability, but rather a joke implying that he is relatively disadvantaged in the Grand Prize competition because So Ji-sub released a massive hit during the same period.

In fact, since both "Phantom Lawyer," starring Yoo, and "Agent Kim Reactivated," starring So, were broadcast on SBS, Cha's remarks added a layer of humor by reflecting the competitive structure of network award ceremonies. Particularly when multiple works from the same broadcaster are successful within a single year, the competition for awards among actors naturally becomes a major point of interest.

Yoo Jae Suk also empathized with Yoo's unfortunate situation. He noted, "It is a shame. 'Phantom Lawyer' did well," pointing out that despite the success of the work, the level of attention could decrease due to strong competing hits.

Faced with the unexpected talk of the Grand Prize, Yoo waved his hands in dismissal, saying, "I wasn't even thinking about the Grand Prize." He explained, "I didn't receive a year-end award, but I did receive an internal SBS award."

Cha did not back down. He teased Yoo once more, saying, "Then that means you shouldn't even come to the year-end awards. It's hard even to be a nominee."

Hearing Cha's unrestrained remarks, Yoo Jae Suk responded, "Do you go around collecting behind-the-scenes stories from the industry just to talk about them?", making the atmosphere even more lighthearted.

Although the conversation was playful, looking back at this year's SBS drama competition, Cha's remarks are not entirely baseless. "Agent Kim Reactivated," starring So Ji-sub, showed a rapid rise from the start of its broadcast and established itself as a major hit for SBS's Friday-Saturday drama slot.

"Agent Kim Reactivated" entered the 20% range by recording a national viewership rating of 21.6% in just 4 episodes, and rose to 22.3% in episode 6. It eventually concluded on a high note, recording a national viewership rating of 23.0% for the final episode. By securing both high viewership ratings and massive topicality, the presence of lead actor So Ji-sub grew even stronger.

In particular, So led the drama with intense characterization and stable acting, proving his long-standing stardom once again. Beyond simply being the lead in a high-rated work, he met the conditions to be a strong Grand Prize candidate by driving both the success of the show and the public popularity of his character.

On the other hand, Yoo also received acclaim through "Phantom Lawyer" for his delicate emotional expression and character interpretation. Cha acknowledged this, evaluating him by saying, "He acted so well."

Ultimately, the core of this conversation is not that Yoo's achievements were lacking, but that a relatively more powerful hit emerged at the same time.

For an actor, the year-end awards ceremony is not decided solely by individual acting ability. Various variables act in a complex way, such as the work's viewership rating, topicality, the public impact of the character, the broadcaster's annual performance, and the existence of competing works. In that sense, Cha's comment about "bad luck" is less a critique of Yoo's talent and more a joke aimed at the irony of award season competition.

While Yoo dismissed any greed for the Grand Prize, the impression left by his work and acting remains. In fact, much like Cha's joke, the emergence of a powerful competitor has only served to highlight the significant achievements of both actors.
