'I Am SOLO' Season 34: Following 'Queen Bee' Controversy, Allegations of Parents' 'Debt Investment' Emerge
Season 34 of the dating variety show 'I Am SOLO' is facing intense scrutiny as various allegations regarding the participants' pasts emerge online, ranging from social group controversies to claims involving their parents' unpaid debts.
The 34th season of the ENA·SBS Plus dating variety show 'I Am SOLO' is causing a stir from the early stages of its broadcast due to various exposé-style posts surrounding the participants. Following eyewitness accounts regarding Young-sook's past activities in a running crew and claims regarding Young-chul's professional life, allegations of so-called 'debt investment'—where a participant's parents allegedly borrowed money in the past and failed to repay it—have now emerged. The interest of viewers, who typically watch the participants' romance and personalities, is rapidly shifting toward their past histories outside of the broadcast.
On the 13th, a post titled "I saw an elementary school classmate who took my parents' money (I Am SOLO)" was uploaded to an online community. The author, identified as Person A, claimed that although they do not usually enjoy watching variety shows, they discovered an elementary school classmate among the participants of 'I Am SOLO' Season 34 in a group chat with friends. Person A explained that rather than the joy of recognizing an old classmate after a long time, the memories of what their family experienced in the past came to mind first.
Person A claimed that the parents of the participant in question borrowed money from their parents about 20 years ago and have not repaid it to this day. They added that when their parents went to retrieve the money, they were instead met with severe profanity and verbal abuse. They stated that their parents suffered significant mental distress at the time, struggling to the point of being unable to sleep properly, and eventually lived their lives having given up on recovering the money.
What Person A requested was an apology rather than monetary compensation. While premising that it is uncertain whether the participant knows about their parents' past actions, they left a post to the effect of asking for a sincere apology if the participant is aware of the truth. Conversely, they stated that if the participant was entirely unaware, they hoped the participant would at least learn about what happened between the families through this incident.
However, the content disclosed so far is merely the individual claim of an author posted on an online community. The circumstances of the loan, the amount, materials to support the situation at the time, and the opposing party's position have not been verified. It has not been revealed whether the participant themselves was involved in or aware of their parents' past actions. Therefore, it is difficult to conclude that a specific participant or their family is responsible based solely on the contents of the post.
Online reactions were divided. Some netizens expressed fatigue at the situation where past issues are repeatedly revealed after appearing on a broadcast, responding with comments such as "There are more stories breaking outside than on the broadcast" and "Why do these past reports keep coming out?" On the other hand, cautious views emerged, pointing out that it is excessive to link the debt issues of the parent generation to the child, and that one should not judge the facts based solely on anonymous posts.
A part that must be particularly distinguished in this controversy is the past actions of the parents and the individual responsibility of the broadcast participant. Opinions are being raised that it is unreasonable to hold someone responsible based solely on family relationships when it is unconfirmed whether the child knew of the parents' past financial transactions or was involved in the issue. Conversely, since the author is appealing the long-unresolved wounds of their family, there is a view that rather than dismissing the post lightly, the facts should be verified. Ultimately, it is pointed out that objective data and explanations from the parties involved should come before emotional criticism or speculation.
The online controversy surrounding 'I Am SOLO' Season 34 is not the first of its kind. Previously, Young-sook was embroiled in a so-called 'Running Crew Queen Bee' controversy due to posts by netizens claiming to have been active in a running crew with her in the past. Some authors made claims to the effect that Young-sook received special treatment within the crew, but as this is also a story originating online that has not undergone verification by the party involved, it is difficult to accept it as fact.
The fact that Young-sook showed difficulty with kitchen work during the meal preparation process on the broadcast also influenced the controversy. Some viewers interpreted her behavior on the broadcast in connection with the past running crew claims. However, it is difficult to conclude a participant's usual personality or interpersonal relationships based solely on some scenes edited and released for a variety program. Evaluations of broadcast scenes and unverified past reports should be treated as separate issues.
Young-chul also drew attention in the early stages of the broadcast with his warm appearance, but after the broadcast, posts claiming to know him appeared on an online community for professionals. The author claimed to have worked in a different team within the same department and raised issues regarding his attendance and work attitude. This content is also in a situation where the truth cannot be confirmed based solely on the disclosed claims.
As 'I Am SOLO' is a program that shows the process of ordinary participants finding romantic partners, the participants' occupations, personalities, and past histories often become subjects of interest for viewers. As the broadcast gains popularity, the phenomenon of eyewitness accounts or reports from acquaintances related to the participants spreading rapidly online is being repeated. However, the fact that an ordinary participant receives public attention does not mean that all claims from acquaintances should be treated as fact or that the family's past history can be verified without limit.
With the allegations of the parents' debt added to the controversies surrounding Young-sook and Young-chul, Season 34 is drawing attention for stories outside the broadcast as much as for the participants' love lines. However, since the currently raised contents are claims whose facts have not been verified, a cautious approach is required. To prevent interest in the participants from leading to the spread of unverified suspicions, it is necessary to examine the credibility of the reports and distinguish the scope of the parties' responsibility.
