Do Kyung Wan reveals why he wears fake nails after surgery

Broadcaster Do Kyung Wan opens up about losing his fingernails to acute osteomyelitis and using accessories to cope with the physical changes.

Broadcaster Do Kyung Wan revealed that he lost his fingernails after undergoing surgery for acute osteomyelitis and has been wearing fake nails ever since. He also shared how he turned to accessories as a way to divert attention while processing the physical changes following his illness and surgery.

Do Kyung-wan Reveals Why He Wears Fake Nails Following Acute Osteomyelitis Surgery

On the 22nd, a video titled "Finally Revealing It" was released on the YouTube channel Dojang TV. During the video, Do showed his hands directly and explained his experience undergoing surgery due to acute osteomyelitis.

"I had acute osteomyelitis in my hand, so I had surgery and had to take a break from activities for about 2 or 3 years," Do stated. Showing his fingers, he continued, "I don't have fingernails. These are fake nails."

He explained that because his fingernails had to be removed to perform surgery on the bone inside, he must wear fake nails constantly. The procedure was not merely a cosmetic issue but a necessary treatment involving the bone within the finger.

Following the surgery, the change in appearance became a significant source of stress for Do, in addition to the physical recovery. Reflecting on his feelings at the time, he confessed, "After the surgery, my hands became a mess."

He noted that he was previously someone who rarely wore accessories. "Originally, I never wore a single piece of jewelry; I didn't pierce my ears, and I didn't pierce my nose. The only thing I ever wore was my wedding ring," Do revealed.

However, his perspective shifted as his hands changed. "I thought about how I could distract attention from my hands that had become unattractive and how I could feel less stressed," he said.

Ultimately, he began using accessories to alleviate the psychological burden of his changed appearance. Rather than focusing solely on hiding the physical deficiency, he found a way to reduce his own discomfort by guiding attention elsewhere.

The decisive moment came from a chance encounter. Do recalled seeing a foreign model wearing a wristwatch while passing by a department store.

"I happened to be passing by a department store and saw a cool foreign model posing while wearing a wristwatch. At that moment, I thought, 'Should I try wearing a wristwatch too?'" he said.

This led him to purchase his own watch and develop an interest in accessories. The wristwatch featured in the video drew additional attention, as it was reported to be in the 4 million won range.

Do's confession carries a deeper meaning than a simple story about luxury watches. For a broadcaster who has been in the spotlight for a long time, his hands are frequently exposed to the camera, making the post-surgery changes a significant psychological burden. He has navigated this by embracing accessories to reconstruct his daily life and appearance.

Having endured a period of hiatus due to acute osteomyelitis, Do Kyung Wan now lives with fake nails. His story carries a poignant message: rather than simply hiding his physical changes, he used them as a catalyst to discover new tastes and a new way of life.
