Han So-hee: Preparing for the inevitable comments on aging

Actress Han So-hee addresses online appearance debates, revealing her long-standing plan to prioritize acting over looks as she ages.

Actress Han So-hee's recent appearance has sparked an unexpected debate over her looks online. Following her appearance on a variety show featuring bleached yellow short hair and a natural vibe, some netizens began mentioning so-called 'aging.' However, Han So-hee herself has previously and publicly expressed her attitude toward accepting the aging process and evaluations of her appearance, ultimately stating her desire to shift the focus from her looks to her acting.

Han So-hee: The Actor's Challenge, Prepared to Face Aging-Related Malicious Comments

Recently, Han So-hee appeared on the YouTube channel "Nothing to Eat" (Charin Geon Jwippuldo Eopjiman), where she shared drinks with Lee Young Ji and revealed a candid side of herself that differs from the image she usually portrays in her works. Matching her bleached yellow short hair with black clothing, she continued her uninhibited conversation in a relatively relaxed atmosphere.

In particular, she expressed her honest feelings about her 20s to Lee Young Ji, saying, "I'm envious, Young Ji. Being twenty-five."

When Lee Young Ji asked, "You're so young, why are you saying that?" Han So-hee responded with a hint of regret, saying, "When I look at people in their 20s these days..."

To the question of "What would you do if you could go back?", she gave an even more serious answer. Han So-hee said, "I think I would live a little more for myself," adding, "In my 20s, I lived too much for others." She then appeared momentarily emotional as she spoke to herself, saying, "So, live for yourself."

Following the release of the video, various reactions regarding her appearance emerged online. Some netizens commented, "The yellow hair doesn't suit her," "She suddenly looks older," or "Her face has changed," while some even mocked her appearance by comparing her to specific characters from her works. Conversely, others argued that it is not a matter that can be concluded as 'aging,' as impressions can change significantly depending on hairstyle, makeup, filming lighting, and more.

In reality, an actor's appearance can vary considerably depending on hairstyle, clothing, makeup, contact lenses, lighting, and camera angles, even for the same person. In particular, the bleached short hair Han So-hee chose for this video is a style quite different from the long black hair image the public has been accustomed to. Therefore, it is inappropriate to judge the actual change in appearance or the degree of aging based solely on the impression from a specific video.

An interesting point is that Han So-hee has been preparing herself for 'aging-related malicious comments' for several years. When appearing on the YouTube channel channel fullmoon, Na Yeong-seok PD asked, "Sohee, where are there malicious comments for you?" to which she replied, "I am already preparing for the time when malicious comments about my aging will start to appear."

At the time, Han So-hee said, "You can't stop aging," noting it is a process that must be accepted to some extent. Furthermore, she revealed a mindset starting from "Fine, I've aged! So what?" and expressed her desire to make the focus shift toward her acting rather than her appearance as time passes. She also shared that she had heard various things from Kim Hye-soo and Kim Hae-sook regarding this.

This statement provides important context for viewing the current debate over her appearance. For Han So-hee, aging is not simply a change in skin or facial lines, but a question of where her value as an actress should lie. In an industry structure where appearance serves as a crucial competitive asset for young actors, the intention to shift the evaluation criteria to acting ability and character portrayal as time passes is essentially a self-awareness regarding an actor's life cycle.

After beginning her full-scale acting career with SBS's "Basement of the World" (Dasi Mannan Segye) in 2017, Han So-hee expanded both her stardom and acting skills through works such as "Flower in Prison," "100 Days My Prince," "The World of the Married," "Nevertheless," Netflix's "My Name," "Soundtrack #1," and "Gyeongseong Creature."

While appearance is certainly an important means of expression for an actor, it cannot replace the entire value of a performer. The fact that Han So-hee anticipated malicious comments regarding aging in the past instead reveals the long-term questions the appearance-centered entertainment industry poses to actors. It is the question of acknowledging that youth is not eternal and how to prove oneself through acting and career in the time that follows.

Ultimately, the point to focus on in this controversy is not how much Han So-hee's face has changed. It lies in how the actor herself accepts the changes that come to everyone as time passes, and how the public evaluates the appearance of others. Since Han So-hee has already stated, "I want to shift the focus from my looks to my acting," this debate serves as a reminder that we need to direct our attention to the essence of her performance and upcoming transformations rather than mere physical critiques.
