Young-cheol, a participant from the 34th season of 'I Am SOLO', has found himself embroiled in an unexpected controversy surrounding his academic background and the location of his university campus. The issue arose after he introduced himself on the program as a graduate of the Department of English Translation and Interpretation at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, leading some viewers to question whether he attended the Seoul campus.
On the 29th, a post titled "I think I saw in the comments that Young-cheol is from the Yongin campus of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies" was uploaded to an online community. The author expressed doubt regarding whether he attended the Yongin campus, noting that the name of the department led them to assume he was part of the Seoul campus.
Following this, a netizen claiming to be a junior from the same department as Young-cheol left a comment asserting that he is a graduate of the Department of English Translation and Interpretation at the Yongin campus of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. This comment fueled increased interest regarding the location of his campus.
Some netizens raised suspicions that Young-cheol may have intentionally omitted specific details by not clarifying the campus location during the broadcast. Conversely, other viewers countered that there is no issue as long as he introduced the university and department truthfully, with reactions such as "What is the problem?" and "He didn't lie, so isn't this just forcing a controversy?"
This academic debate has drawn attention because it emerged at a time when critical views toward Young-cheol have already formed among viewers. As opinions remain divided over his remarks and attitude on the show, the participant's past and personal history are being re-examined online. However, it is noted that curiosity regarding the campus location and allegations of misrepresenting academic credentials are separate matters.
Young-cheol previously drew attention during a pre-interview with the production team when he revealed he had 20 former girlfriends. Since then, he has been at the center of debate for comments that drew criticism from viewers, even while expressing interest in Hyun-sook. He mentioned the possibility of not meeting anyone else, stating, "I wondered if I really had to meet someone else if it wasn't Hyun-sook here."
In particular, after stating, "Actually, I think I could have met people other than Hyun-sook outside," he added, "I actually don't think I would have been able to meet Hyun-sook outside." He faced criticism from viewers as interpretations varied on whether this was an expression of affection or an assessment of the possibility of meeting her.
Born in 1990, Young-cheol was introduced as a 7th-grade administrative civil servant. While interest continues to grow following debates over his views on dating and his behavior on the show, as well as this latest issue regarding his education and campus, there is currently no evidence to conclude that he lied about his academic background.
