Parent of child with autism criticizes YouTuber Park Wi

A parent of a child with autism criticizes YouTuber Park Wi for releasing CCTV footage, sparking debate over the welfare of social service agents.

YouTuber Park Wi has apologized after releasing CCTV footage of a wheelchair accident that occurred during his KTX disembarkation, but the controversy shows no signs of subsiding. A netizen, identifying as a long-time fan of Park and a parent of a child with autism, has publicly criticized his actions as "rash." The debate is expanding into new dimensions, specifically touching upon the welfare blind spots surrounding social service agents.

Parent of Child with Disability Criticizes YouTuber Park We: 'In 10 Years, My Child Will Be a Social Service Agent'

On the 23rd, a post titled "A comment left by a long-time fan and a parent of a child with disabilities regarding Park Wi" spread across several online communities.

The author introduced themselves as a long-time fan who has followed Park since he had only 60,000 to 70,000 subscribers. They also noted they majored in social welfare and participated in the UNICEF Wheracle Walk event with their children two years ago.

Regarding the recent release of the CCTV footage, the author pointed out, "It seems you were rash." They argued, "I watched the video from beginning to end, and I am also in a position of raising a 10-year-old son with autism," claiming that among social service agents, there may be individuals who are not officially recognized as disabled due to the degree of their disability or institutional standards, yet have received special education or struggle with social communication.

The author specifically articulated their concern by mentioning their own child. They stated, "In about 10 years, I will have to send my child to the military," adding, "If a child who attends special classes and has difficulty communicating—but is not officially recognized as disabled by the state—becomes subject to military service, they will serve as a social service agent."

They continued, "That young person might be an ordinary service agent, but they might not be. For someone, that video could be another wound and a form of discrimination. It was truly a rash action."

The controversy began when Park released CCTV footage of a fall accident that occurred during his KTX disembarkation via his YouTube channel 'Wheracle' on the 21st.

Park explained that while using the KTX for a lecture on the 14th, his wheelchair fell to the floor after getting caught on the foot of a worker on the ramp while he was disembarking via a wheelchair lift. He stated he felt significant terror because, with almost no sensation in his lower body, it was difficult to immediately check for injuries such as fractures right after the accident.

Park explained that while the worker did not cause the accident intentionally, he released the CCTV footage to call for safety improvements. However, as the footage clearly captured the social service agent who was assisting Park at the time of the accident, criticisms arose that he had effectively launched a public attack on a specific individual.

The controversy grew even larger as it became known that the incident was an accidental mistake made by the worker while trying to help Park. Critics argue that even if the release of the CCTV was intended to bring safety issues to public attention, it was a method that ultimately concentrated blame on an individual.

As the controversy spread, Park deleted the video and posted an apology. He stated he failed to sufficiently consider the position of the worker, who had tried his best to help him on-site and had apologized politely, saying, "I only thought negatively about a mistake that occurred in the process of trying to help me better."

He went on to apologize to the staff involved and those who watched the video, admitting his method of communication was immature and his thinking was short-sighted. He also expressed his intention to show a more mature and responsible attitude in his future content production.

However, even after the apology, questions persist regarding the circumstances under which the CCTV was obtained and the appropriateness of the disclosure. Furthermore, as the discussion expands to include social perceptions of people with disabilities and the reality of those in welfare blind spots, some analysts suggest this incident has transcended a simple accident between individuals.

Park has consistently produced content on improving perceptions of disability and resolving social prejudice after suffering lower-body paralysis from an unforeseen accident in the past. In 2024, he drew public attention by marrying singer Song Ji-eun, formerly of the group Secret.

As such, this controversy is leading to a debate over how Park's content, which has emphasized the rights and safety of people with disabilities, can paradoxically affect social service agents, who may themselves belong to a socially vulnerable group. The case is expected to prompt further discussion regarding where to draw the line between "raising public interest issues" and "publicly criticizing an individual."
