Sung Yu-ri faces business struggles and capital impairment amid Fin.K.L reunion plans

Sung Yu-ri is facing significant business challenges as her cosmetic brand's revenue has plummeted by more than half, while the operating company remains in a state of capital impairment. These financial hurdles arrive as the singer prepares for a full group reunion with Fin.K.L and awaits a final Supreme Court ruling regarding her husband's legal case.

Sung Yu-ri is navigating a 56.3% decline in Yuride revenue and a negative capital balance of 324,260,000 won as she prepares for a Fin.K.L reunion with Lee Hyo-ri, Ock Joo-hyun, and Lee Jin.

Sung Yu-ri faces business struggles and capital impairment ahead of Fin.K.L reunion

While preparing for a full group reunion with Fin.K.L following a long period surrounding her husband's trial, Sung Yu-ri is now facing the burden of a struggling cosmetics business. The brand, launched using her name and image, has seen its revenue decrease by more than half in one year, and its operating company remains in a state of capital impairment. This presents significant challenges for Sung Yu-ri as she faces both a return to the entertainment industry and a restructuring of her business.

According to industry sources on the 1st, Yuliel, the operator of the cosmetic brand Yuride in which Sung Yu-ri participates, recorded revenue of 40,221,011 won in the first half of this year. This represents a 56.3% decrease compared to the 92,103,341 won recorded during the same period last year. As revenue has dropped by more than half in a single year, interest is growing regarding the brand's market competitiveness and distribution foundation.

However, the decline in revenue did not lead directly to worsening profitability. While Yuliel recorded a net loss of 106,889,369 won in the first half of last year, it turned a profit by recording a net income of 123,746,867 won during the same period this year. Although the scale of the business has shrunk, there has been an improvement in the profit and loss structure. Since the scale of revenue and net income are moving in different directions, the actual recovery of the business will require monitoring future revenue trends and the sustainability of profits.

Yuride is a brand launched in 2020, using Sung Yu-ri's name and star image as its core marketing asset. The brand has sought to expand its touchpoints with consumers by highlighting that Sung Yu-ri participated in the launch process and was directly involved in product development and design. It has emphasized as a differentiator that the products reflect her personal tastes and sensibilities rather than being a brand that simply borrows a celebrity's name.

The parent company, Beauty Skin, also expected to use Sung Yu-ri's recognition as a stepping stone for business expansion. The company projected that through the marketing effect of Sung Yu-ri, it could secure new distribution channels and promote the entry and expansion of its own brands into the domestic market. While leveraging a star's recognition and fandom to drive consumption is a familiar strategy in the beauty industry, maintaining long-term sales requires the brand's own competitiveness and product quality to drive repeat purchases.

The financial situation also remains heavy. As of the end of June this year, Yuliel's capital was negative 324,260,000 won, placing it in a state of capital impairment. Although the capital scale has improved compared to the negative 448,010,000 won at the end of last year, it has not yet recovered to a normal capital structure. Given that the positive indicator of turning a net profit exists alongside the burden of capital impairment, it is possible to analyze that it is too early to judge the stability of the business.

Beyond her business, Sung Yu-ri has maintained contact with the public through broadcasting activities. Last year, she introduced the 'Sung Yu-ri Edition' on GS Shop under her own name and expanded her activities by appearing on the tvN variety program 'Going All the Way'. As we live in an era where an individual celebrity's image influences product credibility and the desire to purchase, interest is focused on what changes Sung Yu-ri's return to broadcasting and external activities will bring to the brand.

Most notably, the plan for a full Fin.K.L reunion is drawing attention. Sung Yu-ri is preparing to resume group activities with Lee Hyo-ri, Ock Joo-hyun, and Lee Jin. The four members are reportedly pursuing a project spanning approximately two years, including new music and performances as well as documentaries and variety programs. As a reunion of the group that represented the music industry in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it is expected to generate significant buzz if the activities materialize.

However, judicial variables regarding Sung Yu-ri's personal situation have not yet been concluded. Her husband, former professional golfer Ahn Sung-hyun, was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison and taken into custody in the first trial regarding a case involving solicitation for virtual asset listings, but he was released on bail on June 11 last year. Subsequently, on February 2 this year, the appellate court overturned the first trial ruling and acquitted him. As the prosecution has appealed this, the case is awaiting a final decision from the Supreme Court of Korea.

The third division of the Supreme Court of Korea is scheduled to deliver the verdict on the appeal for Ahn Sung-hyun on November 12. Attention is focused on whether the acquittal in the appellate court will be upheld and how the conclusion of the case will be finalized. The expectations for the full Fin.K.L reunion, the financial challenges of the cosmetics business, and the variable of her husband's appeal are all overlapping at this time. Attention is drawn to whether Sung Yu-ri can expand her contact with the public through new activities while simultaneously finding a turning point for a rebound in her business.
