Lee Yi-kyung targets comeback with October fan-meeting in Tokyo

Actor Lee Yi-kyung, whose domestic activities have been quiet for some time following private life allegations and tax collection controversies, is shifting his focus toward overseas markets, particularly Japan. While his presence in the Korean broadcasting industry has diminished, he has recently appeared in Japanese dramas and a Korea-Vietnam co-produced film, and is now set to hold a solo fan event in Tokyo this October. It appears he is seeking a breakthrough by expanding his reach abroad.

According to entertainment industry sources on the 17th, Lee will hold his solo fan event, '2026 LEE YIKYUNG SHOW', on October 25 at the Japan Education Center Hitotsubashi Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

This event differs from a standard fan-meeting. As the name 'LEE YIKYUNG SHOW' suggests, Lee is directly participating in the planning to prepare various content for fans to enjoy together.

VIP ticket holders will receive a high-touch session, group photo opportunities, and commemorative goods, while general ticket holders can also receive a send-off from Lee after the performance. As an event designed to facilitate close communication with fans, it is viewed as a strategic overseas move targeting his Japanese fanbase.

Lee also personally announced the event to fans via the social media accounts of the local Japanese event planning agency.

In a video greeting fans in Japanese, he said, "I am coming to see you again through the 'LEE YIKYUNG SHOW' after one year," adding, "I have worked hard to create a time where we can laugh and enjoy together."

He continued, "I will work even harder so that you can think, 'As expected, the LEE YIKYUNG SHOW is fun,' so let's definitely meet on October 25."

Japan is increasingly becoming a vital stage for Lee's recent activities.

Last December, news of his appearance in the Japanese TBS drama 'Dream Stage' was revealed, and in July this year, he appeared in the Korea-Vietnam co-produced film 'Me Oi, Ve Nha'.

While his domestic broadcasting presence has shrunk, he has expanded his professional scope through Japanese dramas and international films.

After debuting in the 2012 film 'White Night', Lee built his footing as an actor through a long period of supporting roles. He made his name through tvN dramas such as 'My Love from the Star', 'Descendants of the Sun', and 'Go Back Couple', and subsequently portrayed diverse characters in works like 'Partners for Justice', 'Welcome to Waikiki', and 'Bloody Heart'.

He also demonstrated strength in variety shows. Rather than being confined to a serious image, he actively showcased his witty and playful side, securing a significant presence as an entertainer. In particular, he built a familiar image with the public through his quick wit and characteristic charm on MBC's 'Hangout with Yoo'.

Because his scope of activity in Korea was so wide, the private life allegations that surfaced last year had a significant impact on his career.

Since those allegations surfaced last November, Lee has effectively suspended his domestic broadcasting activities after stepping down from MBC variety programs such as 'Hangout with Yoo'.

As his notable activities in the domestic industry decreased, his overseas ventures began to take center stage.

Notably, he has been steadily maintaining contact with fans in Japan. Following the 'LEE YIKYUNG SHOW' held last year, he is continuing his relationship with local fans by holding another solo event in Japan after one year.

However, the controversies surrounding Lee did not end with the private life allegations.

In May, he once again came under scrutiny when it was revealed that he had been subject to tax collection following an irregular audit by the National Tax Service.

While tax collection itself does not confirm tax evasion, the burden increased as it led to additional controversy at a time when public attention was already sensitive due to previous allegations.

In response, Lee's agency explained that the issue arose due to differences in tax law interpretation with the authorities regarding cost processing standards during the operation of his corporation. They also clarified, "There was absolutely no intentional omission of income or fraudulent tax evasion."

Ultimately, the key points to watch regarding Lee's current trajectory are whether he will resume domestic activities and the long-term sustainability of his overseas ventures.

In Japan, he is actively utilizing his strengths not only as an actor but also as an entertainer who connects directly with his audience.
