Singer BMK, who was loved by the public for her explosive vocal volume and deep emotions, is now delivering music in a new way—not on stage, but in the classroom. Having not appeared before the public for some time, she is living as a music teacher breathing alongside visually impaired students, conveying the power of healing and recovery found in song.
In the JTBC 'Close-up Camera' broadcast on the 29th, the daily lives of BMK, who is active as a music teacher at the Seoul National School for the Blind, and her students were revealed. The program captured the process of students who lost their sight due to sudden accidents or illnesses finding a new direction in life through music and redrawing their own dreams.
Currently, 61 visually impaired students are enrolled at the Seoul National School for the Blind. While many students continue their studies with the goal of obtaining massage therapist certifications, there are also students who once dreamed of being national swimming athletes, students who hope to become environmental plant engineers, and students preparing for new futures in various fields.
To them, music is not just a school subject. It is a sensory channel that connects them to the world and themselves, and an emotional space that allows them to look at life again after loss.
A student expressed, “In the moment I sing, even though I cannot see, it feels like I can sense the light.” Another student shared the psychological comfort music provides, saying, “Usually, the world feels gray, but when I am listening to music, it feels as if it is dyed in pink.”
This shows that music is an art form that goes beyond a simple auditory experience to influence human emotions, memories, and identity. Philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer explained that the experience of art is the way humans relate to the world. In that sense, music is becoming a new language for the students to understand the unseen world and express themselves.
The reason BMK formed this special connection was through hearing the stories of students at the blind school via an acquaintance with a visual impairment. Wishing that music could be a small source of strength for the students, she personally proposed the opening of music classes to the school, and subsequently began working as a music teacher after undergoing formal teacher recruitment procedures and interviews.
Currently, she meets the students through music about 20 times every semester, marking her second year. Even students who initially did not know BMK was a famous singer came to feel her sincerity and attitude over time.
Students said, “It is impressive to see her always teaching with a bright smile,” and “I can feel that she treats every single student with sincerity.” Rather than her glamorous career as a famous singer, they remember BMK as a person who spends time with them.
BMK also revealed that the time spent with the students has become a new meaning in her own life. Stating that music is also an existence that provides comfort and strength to her, she introduced 'Overjoyed' as the song she listens to when starting her day happily.
In particular, the greatest change for the students was the perception of 'possibility.' One student said, “Now, I have the courage to challenge myself with anything, rather than being tied only to the profession of a massage therapist.”
To this, BMK encouraged, “I hope you accept yourselves as you are and draw your dreams first. And if you believe in those dreams, possibility is open to everyone.”
These words are not mere encouragement, but also a message regarding the social perspective on disability and limitations. This is because human potential is not determined solely by physical conditions, but can be expanded depending on what meaning one assigns to oneself and what path one chooses.
BMK is a vocalist who left a deep impression on the public with songs like 'When Spring Comes' and 'Muldeureo.' However, the most beautiful song she sings now might not be a hit song on stage, but a melody of hope that makes someone dream again.
From singer to teacher, from stage to classroom. BMK's transformation is not a career shift, but a process of expanding the essential meaning of music. Her voice is now going beyond moving the public and is becoming a force that lifts someone's life again.
