Associate defends Jun Hyun-moo's spontaneous travel style amid controversy

As controversy continues surrounding entertainer Jun Hyun-moo's trip to Kazakhstan, a long-time associate has testified that the spontaneous travel style shown on screen is consistent with his real-life personality, sharing past anecdotes to defend him.

Director Sim Hyeongjun revealed a past travel experience with Jun on the 26th, stating, “He has always loved traveling spontaneously like this.” He explained that rather than being a setup for the broadcast, it is a genuine personality trait where he values on-site decision-making over rigid plans.

Sim recalled, “A few years ago, I went down to Namhae County with Jun without any specific plans. We just left, stopped by Jindo, and ended up going all the way to Song Ga-in's village. We were even lucky enough to meet Song Ga-in's father.”

He noted that although there was no set destination, the unexpected turns made the trip more enjoyable. “We didn't decide on a single thing from the start, but because there were no plans, unexpected things kept happening, and the trip was even more fun,” Sim said.

He added that Jun's tendencies remain the same even during overseas trips.

“Once, when we went to Fukuoka, Japan, on a whim, we didn't even book accommodation in advance,” Sim shared. “We rented a car in Fukuoka and drove to Yufuin, but when we arrived, there were so many tourists that all the hotels were fully booked. We almost ended up sleeping on the street because we couldn't find a place to stay.”

Despite the situation, Sim explained that Jun did not get flustered by the unfamiliar environment. While Japan requires adapting to different driving conditions, such as the driver's seat position and traffic flow, Jun naturally handled renting a car and navigating to new destinations.

“This person did not get flustered or scared even in such situations,” Sim said. “Rather, it seemed like he enjoyed the situation itself while driving to new places.”

From Sim's perspective, Jun's approach to travel is to embrace unexpected variables as part of the experience. He views situations like failing to find lodging or arriving at an unplanned location not as failures, but as integral parts of the journey.

Regarding the recent controversial Kazakhstan trip on MBC's 'I Live Alone', Sim remarked, “This is not a particularly unfamiliar sight to me.”

He added, “Moving without a plan, going to unexpected places, and creating situations out of nowhere is no different from the person I have observed for a long time. He is a very eccentric person. He is truly funny and interesting, and there is never a dull moment when you are with him.”

Jun's Kazakhstan trip was featured in episodes of 'I Live Alone' broadcast on the 14th and 21st. The show depicted Jun deciding on a destination at the airport, purchasing tickets, and arranging a rental car and accommodation upon arrival.

However, following the broadcast, questions were raised regarding the authenticity of the 'spontaneous travel' concept, as critics pointed out that local services like rental cars appeared to be handled too smoothly. The controversy intensified when content suggested the filming might have received support from local tourism authorities on an official Almaty, Kazakhstan page.

In response, the 'I Live Alone' production team released an official statement on the 25th, clarifying that they received no filming support or sponsorship. The team explained that the trip proceeded exactly as shown, noting that Jun rented the vehicle at the airport just before departure by presenting his international driving permit and passport as requested by the local company.

In this context, Sim Hyeongjun's testimony is significant as it separates the 'spontaneous travel' premise from Jun's actual personality. Regardless of doubts regarding the broadcast's editing and direction, the fact that Jun habitually travels with minimal planning is being corroborated by his long-time companion.

Sim Hyeongjun first worked with Jun when he directed the so-called 'Elsa costume' calendar photo shoot for Jun on MBC's 'I Live Alone'. Since then, he has worked with him as a director on the MBN variety show 'Jeon Hyun Moo Plan', observing Jun both on and off camera for years.
