Hwang Shin-hye speaks on Park Wi controversy, citing sister's disability

Actress Hwang Shin-hye has voiced a cautious perspective regarding the recent controversy surrounding creator Park Wi's KTX accident, drawing on her personal experience of having a family member with a disability. Rather than offering direct advocacy or criticism of a specific individual, her remarks focused on the sentiment that everyday consideration for people with disabilities should not be diminished.

On the 28th, Hwang shared photos with her family on social media (SNS) with the caption 'Family Lunch Time.' Also present at the gathering was her sister, artist Hwang Jeong-eon, who has been active as a mouth painter after being diagnosed with quadriplegia following an accident in her childhood.

Using the meeting with her sister as a catalyst, Hwang mentioned the recent controversy surrounding Park Wi, stating, "Meeting my sister made me feel uneasy and saddened by the current situation as a family member of a person with a disability truly.""

She added, "I believe that for many people in need of help, someone's small act of consideration can be a great source of strength. I hope that at least that warm heart does not change."

Hwang's remarks are interpreted as a concern that the aftermath of the controversy should not negatively impact the everyday interactions between people with and without disabilities, rather than a direct involvement in the debate over Park Wi's response at the time of his accident.

Park was diagnosed with quadriplegia following an unexpected fall accident in 2014 and lives using a wheelchair. Since then, he has operated the YouTube channel 'Wheracle,' which deals with the mobility, daily life, and social perception of people with disabilities based on his own experiences, continuing efforts to increase public understanding of disability.

The controversy began following an accident that occurred during the process of disembarking a KTX on the 14th. While Park was getting off the train using a wheelchair lift, he lost his balance and fell. As CCTV footage of the accident was subsequently released, a debate erupted regarding the actions of the social service agent who was helping him at the scene.

While Park raised issues regarding the actions at the time, he later faced intense criticism over whether the method of releasing the video was appropriate. In particular, critics pointed out that making the mistake of the person providing help at the scene public through a channel with a massive subscriber base was an excessive response.

As the controversy expanded, Park deleted the video and apologized. He expressed his position that his judgment was short-sighted, stating that he failed to sufficiently consider the position of the worker who was doing their best to help him and had apologized politely.

However, even after the video deletion and apology, the debate did not subside.
