Comedian Lee Su-ji has resumed her YouTube activities approximately 42 days after a controversy. Since the incident involving her content about civil servants sparked political debate, leading to apologies from the production team and a handwritten apology from Lee herself, this return is being perceived as more than just the release of new content.

On the 25th of last month, Lee released a video titled 'Healthy Tips Unrelated to Health, Told by Strong Unnie' on her YouTube channel 'Hot Issue Ji.' This was her first new content exactly 42 days after the problematic video 'Protecting the Iron Rice Bowl of Civil Servant Kim Ji-young [Human Documentary: Real Extreme Job]' was released on July 14.

In this video, Lee transformed into a pharmacist. She showcased her signature observational comedy by exaggerating and recreating the expressionless faces, awkward eye contact, and dry, rigid tones of pharmacists commonly seen in health-related YouTube videos.

Scenes appeared where she gave absurd advice, such as needing to break up to lose weight or listening to specific frequencies. This marked the return of Lee's unique satirical method of capturing the nuances of real-life speech and behavior and exaggerating them to create laughter.

On the 1st, she also released a video titled 'Driving is Yeon-su-ji / Specialist in License Holders / Beginners Welcome / 30 Years of Experience.' This time, Lee transformed into a middle-aged female driving instructor, providing lessons to a young person with a dormant license, continuing her life-oriented character comedy.

This is precisely why Lee's YouTube content has garnered attention. Her method of closely observing the speech patterns and behaviors of specific professional groups—such as kindergarten teachers, nurses, and civil servants—and reconstructing them in a mockumentary format is essentially an expanded version of the impersonations and character acting she has shown on broadcast television.

In particular, Lee is a comedian who actively utilizes non-verbal elements such as facial expressions, speech speed, hand gestures, and awkward silences rather than relying solely on short lines. Because of this, her content based on professional groups possesses a level of realism that makes it feel like actual experiences, while simultaneously carrying the potential to trigger larger-than-expected social debates depending on the choice of subject and context.

The problem lay in a single scene within the video. During the process where the civil servant played by Lee restrains a petitioner, a scene was inserted where a person shouts 're-election,' and some viewers perceived this as categorizing protesters who were demanding re-elections at the time into the same group as malicious petitioners.

The production team explained that there was no political intention, but apologized, stating it was a judgment that failed to sufficiently consider socially sensitive issues, and they deleted the problematic scene. At the time, the production team stated that the controversy was unrelated to Lee's personal political inclinations or intentions and was a problem that occurred because they failed to review it sufficiently during the production process.

However, the controversy did not end with editing a single scene. Lee subsequently apologized through a handwritten letter, stating that she had not fully realized that her acting and content could cause hurt or discomfort to someone.

Currently, the controversial video is set to private. In other words, following the production team's deletion of the scene, the official apology, and Lee's direct apology, the original content itself has essentially disappeared from the public sphere.

In such a situation, as Lee released new videos in succession, reactions were once again divided. Some netizens reacted with sentiments such as, "She returned in less than a month," or "Did she take advantage of the moment when attention was focused on Park Wi?", while conversely, supportive comments like "I was waiting," "The comments are too harsh," and "The idea is good" continued to pour in.

In particular, as Lee's return coincided with the release of YouTuber Park Wi's CCTV video regarding the KTX, comments linking the two incidents appeared. However, there is no basis to conclude that Lee adjusted her return timing by utilizing a specific issue based solely on the temporal sequence of the two events. It is necessary to distinguish between the interpretations raised in online comments and confirmed facts.

Rather, the focus of this return is that Lee has stepped away from the controversial political subject matter to return to her life-oriented character comedy. By using everyday professions like pharmacists and driving instructors as subjects, she has released a series of contents that distance themselves from political and social disputes.

This simultaneously demonstrates the paradox facing modern YouTube comedy. The more precisely reality is mimicked, the more vivid the laughter becomes, but if the context of reality is touched, a simple parody can be interpreted as a social statement. Especially in content consumed through short videos and comments, meanings not intended by the creator can amplify much more quickly.

For Lee, this controversy serves as an event showing that judging the context surrounding a subject has become as important as her ability to build characters. As she has moved her proven character acting skills from the broadcast stage to the more direct platform of YouTube, her future challenge will be determining where to draw the line between the freedom of laughter and social responsibility.

Returning after a 42-day hiatus, Lee is once again aiming for laughter. However, whether this return signifies a complete resolution of the past controversy is a separate matter. More important than the success of new content is how precisely the comedian, having weathered the controversy, will observe reality and adjust her distance from it to create laughter.
