‘Love After Divorce 5’ Park Hye-kyung reveals divorce reason: “He hid his diabetes”
Park Hye-kyung shares the heartbreaking truth behind her three-month marriage, citing a breach of trust regarding her ex-husband's health.
Park Hye-kyung, a participant on the MBN entertainment program ‘Love After Divorce 5’, has shared the heartbreaking reason she had to end her short-lived marriage. She confessed that the wound deeper than her history of kidney transplantation was not her spouse's health issue itself, but a "collapse of trust"—the fact that she was kept in the dark about a crucial truth during their life together.

Park's confession is drawing attention as a poignant example of how vital health transparency, trust, and balance are within a marital relationship.
On the 22nd, a video titled "The Reason I Ran Away After 3 Months of Marriage" was released on actor Jung Ho-geun's YouTube channel. In the video, Park appeared personally to candidly reveal the circumstances of her marriage and the background that led to her divorce.
Park explained the relatively brief duration of her marriage, stating, "(With my ex-husband) we lived together for about five months in our new home before the wedding, and lived for about three more months after the wedding."
When Jung asked for the reason for the divorce, Park cautiously opened up: "That person betrayed my trust. He hid that he was sick."
She noted that she had decided to marry him knowing he was a kidney transplant patient.
Explaining the situation at the time, Park said, "I heard that his kidney was strained due to herbal medicine, which led to the transplant. At first, my family opposed it, but as time passed, my parents grew to like him very much, and I liked him too."
She shared that she chose to marry him while accepting his medical history, adding, "I thought if the kidney problem was caused by herbal medicine, it would be fine if he managed it well afterward."
However, the truth she discovered after the wedding came as a massive shock.
"As it turned out, he had been suffering from diabetes since he was young," Park said. "He hid the fact that he had diabetes from our dating period through the three months of our marriage."
In particular, she revealed that she learned too late that the reason for her ex-husband's kidney transplant was actually related to his diabetes.
Park confessed, "Even after the kidney transplant, he was injecting insulin after breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and even an insulin dose to maintain it for 24 hours, totaling four injections a day. Even while living together, I was unaware of that fact."
The biggest shock to her was not the illness itself, but the fact that the foundation of the relationship—trust—was shattered because her spouse had continued the marriage while hiding his true health status.
"At first, I was so bewildered and angry," Park said, adding, "As time passed and I calmed down, I burst into tears."
She shared her complex emotions, adding, "If he couldn't tell me because he was afraid we might break up, I couldn't help but think about how anxious he must have been while injecting insulin alone."
Ultimately, the decisive reason she chose divorce was not the health issue, but the lack of balance in the relationship.
"I believe a couple should be equal. I don't think I was able to find that kind of relationship," Park said.
She explained, "The other person always had to be above me. If you think of it as a seesaw, it needs to maintain a horizontal balance, but he was a person who could not tolerate it if things tilted even slightly toward my side."
Her story highlights that a vital element of marriage is not just love or sacrifice, but respecting one another as equal individuals. Marriage experts also cite trust, communication, and mutual respect as the most important foundations for maintaining long-term relationships.
Park's story poses a fundamental question beyond whether one can marry someone with an illness: how transparently should partners share their lives within a marriage?
Born in 1990, Park appeared on MBN’s ‘Love After Divorce 5’ and became a final couple with lawyer Shim Kyu-deok, who is two years younger, though they broke up after about a month of dating. Subsequently, Shim drew attention again by appearing on the JTBC entertainment show 'Love War' with Lee Ah-young, a former participant from 'Love After Divorce 1'.
Even after her broadcast appearance, Park continues to resonate with viewers by sharing honest reflections on love, marriage, and the meaning of relationships based on her experiences.
