Moon Geun-young returns to variety shows with 'The Ballad of Us 2'

Actress Moon Geun-young is providing her first official update after announcing her secret marriage to musical actor Jeongpyeong. Following a long hiatus due to health issues, Moon is set to meet viewers with a much more relaxed and bright presence as a regular cast member on a new variety show.

Moon will join as a Top 100 representative for the massive SBS music audition project 'The Ballad of Us 2', which is scheduled to premiere in October. During the first recording held on the 8th and 9th, eight Top 100 representatives—including Moon Geun-young, Jun Hyun-moo, Jung Jae-hyung, Cha Tae-hyun, Park Kyung Lim, Joo Woo-jae, Roy Kim, and Jung Seung-hwan—participated alongside 150 Top 100 members.

In particular, Moon is one of the most anticipated figures this season. It has been approximately seven years since she last joined a variety program as a regular cast member. Although this marks her first time serving as a Top 100 representative as an actress, she reportedly received praise on set for her sincere and delicate observations of the participants' performances.

According to the production team, Moon did not stop at simply evaluating the stages but showed a deep ability to read the emotions and stories of each participant. She is said to have conveyed empathy and encouragement through her characteristic calm yet warm communication style, while also displaying unexpected variety skills by naturally harmonizing with existing representatives such as Jun Hyun-moo, Jung Jae-hyung, and Cha Tae-hyun.

The reason for the intense interest in Moon's return is the significant personal journey she has undergone in recent years.

Previously, after being diagnosed with acute compartment syndrome, a rare disease, Moon suspended her entertainment activities to focus on treatment. After recovering her health, she reappeared to the public on tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' last April. At that time, she received widespread support for sharing her journey of recovery with a bright and honest demeanor.

Only a few months later, she revealed a major milestone in her personal life.

On July 29, Moon personally announced her marriage via SNS, stating, "I am getting married." Her spouse is musical actor Jeongpyeong, who is seven years her senior. The two reportedly held a small wedding ceremony inviting only family and close acquaintances after dating for a long time.

Having recovered her health after a long battle with illness and now starting a new chapter with a family of her own, Moon's decision to join a variety show after a seven-year hiatus marks a significant turning point in her life.

Moon's transformation was evident during the first recording of 'The Ballad of Us 2'. The production team noted that she empathized deeply with the participants' stories, viewing their stages with a more delicate perspective than anyone else.

While the average age of participants has decreased compared to Season 1, younger contestants performed legendary hits from pop music history, including a moment where all Top 100 members rose from their seats to applaud a single performer.

For Moon, this program holds more meaning than a simple variety comeback. As an actress accustomed to portraying characters, she must now observe the songs and stories of the participants and convey emotions through her own words.

Meanwhile, 'The Ballad of Us' Season 1 garnered significant attention, ranking first in the 2049 viewership rating for all episodes, ranking first among all variety shows in Netflix's 'Today's Series', and accumulating 100 million online views. Furthermore, it proved its status as a premier music audition program by winning the Best Entertainment TV Program award at the 39th Korea Broadcasting Awards.
