Creator Park Wi is embroiled in controversy following the release of CCTV footage of a KTX accident, leading to a re-examination of his past remarks emphasizing disability rights and barrier-free environments. While his past criticisms of inaccessible facilities earned him empathy and applause, the focus of criticism has shifted this time because he publicly exposed the mistake of a social service agent who was assisting him.

On August 14, Park suffered an accident while disembarking from a KTX, where his wheelchair wheel got caught in the foot of a social service agent who was supporting a portable ramp, causing him to fall. Subsequently, with the intention of preventing a recurrence and raising awareness about safe mobility environments for people with disabilities, he released the CCTV footage via his personal YouTube channel, 'Wheracle.'

However, the controversy grew as the social service agent involved in the accident was exposed in the video. Criticism arose that although the mistake made by the worker helping Park was not a malicious act, it was excessive to reveal it publicly through a major channel.

Park eventually deleted the video and apologized, stating, "I only thought negatively about the mistake that occurred during the process of helping me," and adding, "My method of delivery was immature and my thinking was short-sighted." Following this, scheduled lectures and events have been repeatedly canceled as the aftermath of the controversy continues.

In this process, his remarks at last year's MBC Entertainment Awards are gaining attention once again.

At the '2024 MBC Entertainment Awards' held last January, Park was nominated for the Best Couple Award alongside Song Ji-eun for 'The Manager.' During a live interview at the awards ceremony, Song said, "It is an honor just to be here. We came to applaud the winners."

At that moment, Park suddenly remarked, "I saw that there was no ramp. Perhaps it's not for me," causing the atmosphere on site to freeze momentarily. Jun Hyun-moo hurriedly explained, "If they win the award, they will install it immediately. If we install it, wouldn't the winner stand out? That's why," and Park immediately clarified, "I was joking." Song also chimed in that it was a joke, while Jun broke into a sweat, telling him not to make such jokes during a live broadcast.

At the time, the remark was evaluated as having served to remind people of the physical barriers that disabled audiences might face at large-scale events like broadcasts and award ceremonies. After being diagnosed with quadriplegia following a fall accident in 2014, Park underwent rehabilitation and became able to move his upper body, subsequently continuing his activities on YouTube and through lectures based on his experiences. He built public recognition by expanding the conversation from disability being a personal misfortune to it being a matter of social environment and systems.

In 2024, he drew significant attention again by marrying Song Ji-eun, a former member of the group Secret. The two have shown a daily life that transcends the boundaries between disabled and non-disabled through broadcasts and SNS, while simultaneously promoting the importance of mobility rights and barrier-free environments.

Because of this, the point the public is focusing on in this controversy does not merely stop at 'whether he released the CCTV.' The core issue has emerged as how the person who previously highlighted physical inconveniences as social issues chose to publicize the mistake of another person that occurred while helping him.

Some point out that in improving perceptions of people with disabilities, it should include consideration for the people participating in that process, not just the improvement of facilities. Just as a single ramp can become a symbol of mobility rights, the face and identity of a person appearing in an accident video can be directly linked to an individual's rights and dignity.

Ultimately, this controversy makes one question how the 'good influence' that Park has emphasized all this time should be implemented.
