BTS draws 1.92 million fans in North America with 'Arirang' power

BTS concludes a massive, sold-out North American tour, setting new attendance records at SoFi Stadium and showcasing the global cultural impact of K-pop.

BTS has once again proven their enduring influence in the global pop market, concluding their North American tour with sold-out shows and approximately 1.92 million attendees.

Spanning 31 performances across 12 regions, the tour traversed major cities in the United States and Canada, accumulating massive box office records. At SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, where the final stage was held, the group set new records for both the number of performances and cumulative attendance.

BTS completed their North American schedule by holding the 'BTS WORLD TOUR ‘ARIRANG’ IN LOS ANGELES' at SoFi Stadium in California on the 1st–2nd and 5th–6th (local time). The tour, which began in Tampa and concluded in Los Angeles, saw all 31 performances across 12 regions sold out, attracting approximately 1.92 million people. The four shows in LA alone drew about 282,000 fans, and the final performance was broadcast live to 177 countries and regions worldwide via Weverse.

The records set at SoFi Stadium symbolically demonstrate BTS's status in the North American market. Following four performances at the same venue in 2021, the group returned for four more shows during this tour, totaling 8 performances. With a cumulative attendance of approximately 496,000, they simultaneously set the record for the most performances and the highest cumulative attendance by a single group since the opening of SoFi Stadium.

The significance of the performances extended beyond the scale of the audience. When the melody of the Korean folk song 'Arirang' played during the track 'Body to Body' from their 5th full-length album 'ARIRANG', fans in the audience simultaneously raised the Taegeukgi (Korean national flag). This was a moment where traditional Korean sentiment was transformed into a collective experience for global fans in a massive American stadium. It demonstrated how K-pop has moved beyond simply exporting music produced in Korea to transforming linguistic and cultural symbols into assets of global popular culture.

Local media attention was also intense. The Los Angeles Times evaluated BTS as "world-class pop artists," noting that the cultural impact they have built is difficult to replace. Forbes focused not only on the energy inside the venues but also on the "BTS phenomenon" that spread throughout LA. They highlighted how fans from diverse cultural backgrounds sang along to 'Arirang' and enjoyed the show using Korean elements such as *hanbok*, Taegeukgi flags, and norigae, as well as promotions in local shops and restaurants, including Koreatown.

The hospitality from local governments shows that BTS's influence has expanded beyond the music industry into local communities, tourism, and commerce. The City of Los Angeles designated September 1–8 as "BTS Week" and lit City Hall in red, the symbolic color of 'ARIRANG'. Toronto designated the performance period as "BTS Weekend" and temporarily named a section of Yonge Street "BTS Boulevard," while El Paso, Illinois, and El Paso, Texas, designated "BTS Day" and "El Paso BTS Weekend," respectively. In Maryland, Governor Wes Moore released a welcome video, and in Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum officially invited BTS.

The members expressed their gratitude to fans during the final stage of the North American tour. “It feels like just yesterday we started in Tampa, and it doesn't feel real that we are already saying goodbye in our final destination, Los Angeles,” they said. “I hope we remain connected forever, wherever we are.” Jung Kook shared a hand-drawn postcard and sent a message to fans saying, “You are perfect to me.” Fan events also took place to celebrate Jung Kook's birthday on September 1, the day of the first performance, and RM's birthday on the 6th, the day of the final performance.

The reason this tour is garnering even more attention is that BTS has returned to the global stage as a complete group after a long period of military service. Since the late 2010s, BTS entered the heart of the North American pop market with music that moves between Korean and English, such as 'Dynamite', 'Butter', and 'Permission to Dance', and expanded stadium performances into a global cultural event through large-scale world tours like 'LOVE YOURSELF' and 'MAP OF THE SOUL'. The North American success of this 'ARIRANG' tour is significant as it shows that even after their hiatus, they can generate ongoing demand for performances without relying solely on their past fandom size.

Above all, BTS's records are difficult to explain through ticket sales alone. The scale of 1.92 million attendees, 31 sold-out shows, the record for most performances and highest attendance at SoFi Stadium, the concentrated coverage by major foreign media, and the official designation of commemorative days by local governments are all connected in a single flow. This demonstrates that BTS has built a unique brand and cultural influence in the global pop market that transcends the genre of K-pop.

Following their success in North America, BTS will head to South America. Starting October 2 in Bogota, Colombia, they will visit Lima, Peru; Santiago, Chile; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Sao Paulo, Brazil. In particular, the scheduled performances in Colombia, Peru, and Argentina will mark their first performances as a complete group in those countries, drawing interest to whether the 'ARIRANG' tour fever will continue to set new records in South America.

This North American tour left a phenomenon that is difficult to describe with the familiar label of a "world-class K-pop group." Inside the venues, 1.92 million people were connected through music, while outside, the landscape of cities, commerce, and cultural events moved around BTS. Under the name 'ARIRANG', the combination of traditional Korean cultural codes and modern pop music allowed BTS to once again prove the scale of the global cultural landscape they have created.
