Broadcaster Lee Kyung-kyu said his YouTube channel Gatgyeonggyu is preparing a travel program, describing high view counts as a reason he decided to try the format himself.

A video titled “The shocking reason Lee Kyung-kyu suddenly decided to study in Japan after 27 years (Japanese lessons, Takuya)” was posted on the YouTube channel Gatgyeonggyu on the afternoon of the 15th. In the video, he explained the background to planning a travel program as new content and signaled a move into travel videos.

“Let’s make a travel program this time on Gatgyeonggyu,” Lee said. He said the channel would travel so he could share his perspective on the culture and trends of each country, with the idea of introducing more than just well-known tourist attractions.

Lee said he had only realized after several years that travel was “the lifeblood of YouTube.” “Why do travel videos get so many views? I’m a little envious, too. So I thought I’d try traveling as well,” he said.

He chose Japan for the first trip. “I was in Japan for about a year in 1999, to study Japanese television,” Lee said. The article said his experience there appears to have influenced the choice, and that he plans to revisit the country and look at its culture and trends through his own perspective.

The source described Lee’s belated recognition of a popular YouTube format as a source of humor, and said view counts are a significant measure for creators. It also characterized his willingness to state his ambition openly as part of his comic appeal.

The article said interest would center on how the travel content performs and whether Lee can bring to it the observational skills, sharp remarks and distinctive way of speaking he built over a long entertainment career. Lee’s declaration that he was traveling because he envied the views drew attention to whether the format could become a new hit formula.
