Male Intruder Disrupts N.Flying Stage—Yoo Hwe-seung Checks on His Condition
Band N.Flying experienced a dangerous situation during a university festival performance when a male intruder rushed the stage. While the incident caused tension, member Yoo Hwe-seung drew attention for his calm response in checking on the man being restrained.
The band N.Flying experienced a harrowing situation due to an audience member rushing the stage during a university festival performance. A man climbed onto the stage, approached member Yoo Hwe-seung, and even kicked another member's microphone stand in a sudden outburst. It was a moment that could have led to a major accident, but Yoo Hwe-seung drew attention by instead checking on the condition of the man being restrained. While the singer's calm response is gaining notice, concerns are also growing regarding the lax safety management at university festivals.
N.Flying met with the audience on the stage of the Hanshin University festival on the 7th. While the performance was in full swing during the song "Rooftop," a man suddenly climbed onto the stage. The man approached Yoo Hwe-seung, pointing to his wrist to try and speak to him, and subsequently kicked Seo Dong-sung's microphone stand. The stage, which had been filled with music and cheers, was instantly caught in a sudden situation.
Even the mere approach of an audience member to a performing singer can be a risk factor, but the tension at the scene intensified as the man went as far as kicking stage equipment. This is because if a microphone stand falls or hits surrounding equipment, not only the members but also the staff and audience near the stage could be injured. Considering that it is difficult for artists continuing a performance to immediately grasp and respond to such situations, stage intrusion is a safety issue that is hard to dismiss as a simple commotion.
In this process, Yoo Hwe-seung's response was noted separately. While the man was being restrained, Yoo Hwe-seung showed that he was looking after the other person's condition rather than just looking after his own safety. Even in a situation where one would be flustered by a sudden intrusion and threatening behavior, his attitude of trying to continue the performance without showing great agitation also drew attention. The calmness shown in the sudden situation and the act of checking on the other person are points worthy of a favorable response.
However, an artist's consideration and calmness cannot replace gaps in safety management. A singer on stage can be exposed to unexpected dangers while conducting a performance and should not have to bear the responsibility of directly controlling the audience's behavior. In particular, even if sufficient distance or control lines are provided between the stage and the audience seats, if security personnel are not properly deployed to prevent actual approach, similar accidents can recur at any time.
Controversy was also raised regarding the end time of the performance. A nearby resident claimed that the performance exceeded the announced end time of 10:00 PM, but whether the performance actually exceeded the scheduled time has not been confirmed. The identity of the man who intruded on the stage and the reason for his actions have also not been officially revealed. Therefore, rather than hastily linking the issue of performance time with the cause of the intrusion accident, it is necessary to examine the confirmed facts and the raised claims separately.
Incidents where audience members climb onto the stage and approach singers have been repeated at university festivals in the past. At the Pohang University festival in 2022, a man took Huh Gak's microphone and acted threateningly, claiming he could not sleep. At a Chung-Ang University festival in the same year, a male audience member wandered the stage while hugging CL, and during a BOL4 performance, a situation occurred where an audience member climbed onto the stage to demand a photo.
Even further back in 2011, during a Girls' Generation performance, a man was restrained after trying to grab TAEYEON's hand and pull her off the stage. G-DRAGON has also experienced audience intrusions during domestic and international performances. While the cases and situations differ, they share the commonality that if a performer is not sufficiently protected from the sudden actions of an audience member, it can lead to physical danger and the suspension of the entire performance. This is why stage intrusion should not be lightly accepted as mere fan sentiment or a momentary outburst.
University festivals have the characteristic of being open cultural events enjoyed by students and local residents together. While the high accessibility and pursuit of a free atmosphere are advantages, safety measures such as audience movement paths, stage boundaries, and the deployment of security personnel must be prepared just as meticulously. A response system is also needed to control audience members attempting to approach the stage in advance and to quickly separate them when a sudden situation occurs. It is difficult to expect fundamental improvement through a method where only the singer's response becomes a hot topic after an accident has occurred.
The calmness and consideration shown by Yoo Hwe-seung are worthy of positive evaluation. However, if that scene is consumed only as a touching heartwarming story, the problems that actually need to be solved may be pushed to the background. It is not the duty of an artist to act resolutely even in dangerous situations. Ensuring safety so that they can focus on music on stage is a task that the performance organizers and on-site management personnel must take primary responsibility for. For this accident not to end as just another one-time commotion, the security and safety management systems of university festivals must be re-examined.
