Nam Gyu-ri debuts bold new look with eyebrow piercing

Singer and actress Nam Gyu-ri showcases a striking transformation with eyebrow piercings, marking SeeYa's 20th anniversary and her solo comeback.

Singer and actress Nam Gyu-ri has revealed a unique charm, showcasing visuals that defy her age with off-shoulder fashion and eyebrow piercings. Beyond a mere physical transformation, she is turning her 20th anniversary since debut into a new musical turning point by balancing SeeYa's reunion after 15 years with her solo activities.

On the 7th, Nam released several photos and videos on her social media (SNS) with the caption, "Let's do that, Our Love." In the photos, she creates a bright and cheerful atmosphere wearing an apricot-colored off-shoulder top. Born in 1984 and 42 years old this year, Nam showed an unchanging image alongside her signature youthful appearance.

The atmosphere shifted completely in the video released afterward. Wearing black clothing and sporting an eyebrow piercing, Nam presented a more intense and urban image while singing her new song. As her caption "I pierced my eyebrow. U.S.G. filming set" suggests, this transformation also serves as a visual tool to expand the musical concept of her new digital album, 'Let's Do That, Our Love.'

Nam released the digital album 'Let's Do That, Our Love' on the 6th. The album is characterized by rearranging a single melody into two different styles, divided into Part 1 and Part 2. In Part 1, she delivers delicate and lovely vocals, while in Part 2, she showcases a stronger appeal and powerful singing style. Violinist KoN participated in Part 2, combining the sorrowful textures of vocals and the violin.

This solo activity holds more meaning for Nam than just releasing a new song. She debuted in 2006 as part of SeeYa alongside Kim Yeon-ji and Lee Bo-ram, securing public recognition with hits such as 'Scent of a Woman,' 'Greeting of Love,' and 'Shoes.' At the time, SeeYa established themselves as leaders of female vocal groups in the late 2000s, earning the nickname 'Female SG Wannabe' due to their solid vocal abilities and deep, emotional ballads.

After disbanding in 2011, the three members walked separate paths until they reopened the possibility of a reunion by performing together on JTBC's 'Sugar Man 3' in 2020. However, due to realistic constraints such as agency issues and the COVID-19 pandemic, more time was needed to actually resume activities. Finally, meeting their 20th anniversary this year, the three began musical activities again under the name SeeYa after 15 years.

SeeYa officially ended their hiatus by releasing the studio album 'First, Again' last May, and last month, they held their nationwide tour Seoul concert at Kyung Hee University's Peace Hall. The fact that all seats for both days of the performance were sold out confirmed that the existing fandom's cohesion remains significant even after the reunion.

Separately from group activities, Nam is also expanding her territory as a solo vocalist. Following her remake of SeeYa's representative song 'Greeting of Love' this year, she chose a method of varying one song into two styles this time, focusing on demonstrating her current vocal range and expressive power.

Her career as an actress has also been an important pillar in expanding Nam's scope of activity. After debuting as a singer and expanding into acting, she has continuously updated her image by moving across music, video, and fashion. This eyebrow piercing is read not as a simple change in appearance, but as a process where a 20-year veteran artist experiments with new aesthetic expressions rather than settling for her representative image from the past.

The core of Nam's recent steps does not lie solely in the external descriptor of being 'youthful.' It lies in her narrowing the gap between the SeeYa of 20 years ago, the SeeYa of now, and the solo singer Nam Gyu-ri, making both her past popularity and current creative activities exist in the present. More noticeable than the change in appearance is the fact that Nam, in her 40s, is still actively updating her musical color and stage image.
