Nam Ji-hyun transforms into Barre instructor with 4Minute DNA

Former 4Minute member Nam Ji-hyun finds a new calling as a Barre instructor and studio owner, transitioning from idol and actress to wellness expert.

Nam Ji-hyun, formerly of the girl group 4Minute, is now making her mark not on the stage, but in a fitness studio. Having transitioned from idol to actress and now to a Barre instructor and studio owner, she is engaging with the public in a completely different way by personally correcting students' movements and leading classes.

On the 12th, Nam shared photos and videos on her social media (SNS) with the caption, “Barre with clients. A wellness barre class with VIP clients. It was a grateful time to sweat together.” In the posts, she is seen leading classes, meticulously observing the postures of members, and at times brightening the atmosphere with a smile.

Wearing workout clothes instead of glamorous stage outfits and breathing alongside her members, her identity as instructor Nam appears even more distinct than her identity as celebrity Nam. Beyond simply exercising, she is taking on the role of an educator by conveying the workout methods she has mastered, making her current activities quite different in nature from her past broadcasting career.

Nam's transformation into a Barre instructor did not happen suddenly. She debuted in 2009 with 4Minute, performing as a K-pop idol with several hits such as 'Hot Issue,' 'Crazy,' and 'Volume Up.' Following 4Minute's disbandment in 2016, she transitioned to acting, expanding her career through dramas and films.

Her experience performing on stage as an idol group leader connects to her new profession. The process of closely observing body balance and movement and creating physical changes through repetitive training was not unfamiliar territory for her, given her background in dance and performance.

In fact, Nam is known to have steadily expanded her interest in fitness. She studied various disciplines including Barre, Pilates, and yoga, and based on this expertise, she opened a professional studio to work as an instructor. Recently, she has expanded her scope beyond a simple hobby to building wellness content under her own name.

This change was specifically highlighted on the YouTube channel 'Yurayurahae,' released last June. Yura of Girl's Day visited the space operated by Nam to take a Barre class, where Nam introduced herself as the "owner here" and stepped up as the instructor. The reunion of the two, meeting after about 10 years, drew attention as they reminisced about their past girl group days while meeting in a completely different professional setting.

The Barre explained by Nam is easily confused with ballet due to its name, but the two are different. It is closer to full-body fitness that combines the basic postures and movements of ballet with yoga, Pilates, and strength training. She explained that while it has been popular abroad for a long time, it has only relatively recently begun to gain traction in Korea.

The core of Barre does not lie simply in creating a slim physique. It is characterized by increasing muscular endurance and balance through repetitive movements, making practitioners conscious of body alignment and posture through continuous, small movements. By combining the aesthetic elements of ballet with the intensity of fitness and the core-centered movements of Pilates, it aligns perfectly with recent wellness trends.

Nam does not describe Barre merely as a means of body management. She previously mentioned the "essence of Barre, the essence of wellness," expressing that the true meaning of exercise is to maintain both mind and body health and to live with positive energy.

These activities are also significant in terms of a celebrity's "second career." There are increasing cases of individuals developing long-held interests and expertise into separate professions rather than defining their careers solely through broadcasting. Especially for stars from idol backgrounds, whose active periods can be relatively short, securing expertise in a specific field can be a realistic strategy for career sustainability.

In Nam's case, her experience of constantly using her own body naturally meshed with the field of Barre. An idol who once performed choreography on stage is now in a position to observe others' movements and correct their postures—a shift from a "body that is shown" to a "body that teaches movement." Recently, Nam's trajectory has been noteworthy as wellness and fitness expand beyond a trend into a lifestyle industry. For instance, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, included Barre in a tourism program combining wellness and K-culture this year and introduced Nam as a Barre master instructor.

Nam also participates in Barre classes for the general public. Last September, she helped promote an outdoor program that combines K-pop music with Barre movements at Seoul Plaza, expanding the intersection of exercise and pop culture. The star who once danced to the music is now using that same music to lead fitness sessions, reconstructing her experience for a new era.

To those who remember her from her 4Minute days, her current image may seem unfamiliar. However, by evolving her long-standing interests into a professional vocation after her time as an idol and actress, her transformation carries significance far beyond a simple career update.

The star who once stood under the spotlight has moved to a position where she watches a student's posture and advises, "You need to move a little more accurately." It is not that 4Minute's Nam Ji-hyun has disappeared; rather, "Barre Director Nam Ji-hyun" has emerged at the forefront of a new career, utilizing her decade of experience in a whole new way.
