Asian Games MVP Oh Sang-uk's Chef "Relative" Gets Ruled a Stranger by Fellow Chefs
Fencer Oh Sang-uk told chefs on JTBC's Please Take Care of My Refrigerator since 2014 that Nam Sung-Hoon is a distant relative, and the chefs laughed that the two were strangers. Oh was recently named Korea's MVP at the Asian Games.
Fencer Oh Sang-uk, a double gold medallist and the MVP of Korea's delegation at the 2026 20th Aichi–Nagoya Asian Games, has revealed a family tie to chef Nam Sung-Hoon. The chefs around the table were quick to laugh the connection off as no relation at all.
A guest list led by Asian Games stars
The reveal came on JTBC's entertainment show Please Take Care of My Refrigerator since 2014. At the end of episode 93, broadcast on the 18th, a preview announced that Oh would appear with judo athlete Huh Mimi and track athlete Bweisa Daniel Gasama, all of whom performed at the Aichi–Nagoya Games. Oh told the chefs that one of them was from the family, then pointed to Nam Sung-Hoon, the chef who became known through Netflix's entertainment show Culinary Class Wars.
A family tree too long to follow
Explaining the link proved more complicated than expected. Pointing at Nam Sung-Hoon, Oh said the chef is "my paternal grandfather's younger brother's wife's older sister's son." The cast looked lost by the time the chain reached the wife's older sister. The relationship was too long to explain as a simple tie of kinship, yet hardly close enough to call immediate family.
The chefs answered in unison, "This is a stranger," and burst out laughing. Oh tried hard to lay out the relationship precisely, but to the listeners it amounted to no relation at all. It is the kind of connection one might only trace at a family gathering, and it turned into an unexpected source of laughs on a variety show.
From the piste to the studio
Oh recently won gold in both the individual and team sabre events at the Aichi–Nagoya Asian Games, becoming a two-gold winner at consecutive Asian Games. The team final against Japan ended in a dramatic comeback win, and Oh was named the Korean delegation's MVP. The fencer who showed overwhelming focus on the piste displayed a different side on television, personally explaining a distant family link between an athlete and a chef from two different fields.
Oh's own disclosure brought the tie to light, and the convoluted family terms were themselves a source of fun. With the relationship now out, attention turns to what the two will say to each other in the main broadcast. The tie is as distant as the chain Oh described, so the chefs' "This is a stranger" reaction is expected to get viewers laughing too.
Oh Seo-yoon reports for Mediafine Global, mainly covering K-Variety and also writing on K-drama, K-pop and K-movie.
