Park Wi family controversy spills over to Yoon So-hee; unexpected twist as she is "not even an adopted daughter"
Allegations of daughter-in-law discrimination within YouTuber Park Wi's family have expanded, leading to unexpected criticism of actress Yoon So-hee. While the controversy stems from a Chuseok video, Yoon's past relationships and family history are being scrutinized simply because she appeared in the footage.
As allegations of daughter-in-law discrimination surrounding YouTuber Park Wi's family spread, unexpected criticism is also being poured onto actress Yoon So-hee. The starting point of the controversy is a family Chuseok video released in 2024, but because Yoon So-hee appeared in the video, her past connections and family relationships have also been brought under scrutiny. Following speculations regarding internal family discrimination based on certain scenes, even the expressions used by PD Park Chan-hong to imply he regards Yoon So-hee like family have become subjects of controversy, causing online public opinion to spread in another direction.
Recently, the video titled 'First Chuseok at the In-laws' from the YouTube channel 'WERACLE' operated by Park Wi has been gaining attention again on online communities and SNS. The video captures Park Wi and his wife Song Ji-eun visiting the family for Chuseok, and PD Park Chan-hong and Yoon So-hee also appear. At the time, it was content showing a family's holiday scene, but as some scenes were reinterpreted later, it has escalated into a debate surrounding the relationships between family members.
Some netizens raised suspicions that Song Ji-eun might have been discriminated against within the family, citing the use of tableware, prayers before meals, and conversation content in the video. Points mentioned as grounds for the controversy include the fact that Song Ji-eun used different dishes compared to the scene where Park Wi, his parents, and Yoon So-hee used the same type of tableware, and that Yoon So-hee was mentioned before Song Ji-eun during the prayer before the meal. In this way, every single everyday scene is being overinterpreted online and consumed as clues to judge the treatment among family members.
However, it is difficult to conclude actual family relationships or discriminatory intentions from only parts of the video. This is because one cannot judge whether someone was intentionally excluded based solely on the type of tableware or the order of mention in a prayer. It is necessary to be cautious about accepting specific scenes as evidence of the entire relationship without knowing the circumstances at the time and the context not captured in the video. One must distinguish between raising suspicions to examine a problem and spreading unverified interpretations as if they were facts.
The problem is that the controversy has spread beyond the family in the video to Yoon So-hee. Online, the expression 'adopted daughter' used to explain the relationship between PD Park Chan-hong and Yoon So-hee has been brought up again. While an adopted daughter generally refers to a relationship where someone who is not a biological parent raises a child like their own, in the entertainment industry, it is also used to express a special closeness between a teacher and student or a director and actor, separate from actual legal or blood relationships. Therefore, it is inappropriate to interpret the relationship between the two as a legal family relationship simply because the expression appeared.
Their connection dates back to the tvN drama 'Memory' broadcast in 2016. Yoon So-hee appeared in this work directed by PD Park Chan-hong, forming a bond as director and actor. Yoon So-hee previously revealed in an interview that PD Park had mentioned he would continue to call her and Lee Joon-ho his son and daughter. Since there is room to view this as expressing the trust and affection built through the work by comparing it to a family, it is logically unreasonable to criticize her as if she bears any responsibility for the daughter-in-law discrimination controversy in Park Wi's family.
Past remarks regarding Yoon So-hee's biological father are also being re-examined. Last year, Yoon So-hee appeared on the YouTube channel 'No-Back Tak Jae-hoon' and revealed that her father had passed away. In a previous broadcast, she also shared stories about her father, who was known to be an architectural designer and a professor teaching students at a university. Yoon So-hee, who is famous for her history of graduating early from a science high school and entering the Department of Biotechnology at KAIST, also disclosed an anecdote where her father opposed her past acting activities. The fact that her personal family history, which is not directly related to this controversy, is being summoned again shows a pattern where online interest expands into the private lives of the parties involved.
This matter reveals a phenomenon where individuals not directly involved become targets of criticism during the process of online controversy spreading. It is a method where a scene captured in a single video gives rise to suspicion, and the past remarks and human relationships of the person appearing in that scene are sequentially summoned. In particular, expressions like 'adopted daughter,' which can change meaning depending on the context, can serve as clues to explain a relationship, but in provocative debates, they can instead become material that confuses the facts.
The suspicion of daughter-in-law discrimination in Park Wi's family is a matter that needs to be examined by distinguishing between the scenes in the video and the actual situation. At the same time, it is possible to point out that Yoon So-hee should not bear the responsibility for the controversy simply because she appeared in the video. Relationships and emotions within a family are difficult to judge fully from just a few short video scenes. In a situation where unverified speculation digs into an individual's past and family history, what is needed is not expanding the target of criticism, but an attitude of distinguishing the basis and limits of the raised suspicions.
