Seo Dong-ju, Immersed in Clubs and Pool Parties After Divorce: "It Was Fantastic When I Got Drunk"
Broadcaster Seo Dong-ju candidly revealed her past of indulging in nightlife, including clubs and pool parties, for about a year following her divorce.
Broadcaster Seo Dong-ju has candidly confessed to a past where she belatedly discovered the joys of nightlife after her divorce. She revealed that because she had focused so intensely on her studies, she had not experienced the drinking sessions and club culture that her peers enjoyed, and that her desire to play suddenly grew following her divorce. Surprising many, Seo Dong-ju confessed that after having her first drink only after turning 30, she continued a lifestyle of staying up all night with friends and enjoying pool parties and clubs for about one year.
In the video titled 'Avoidance is This Dangerous | Are You All Doing Well EP.08,' released on the YouTube channel 'STUDIO OMG' on the 9th, Seo Dong-ju appeared to look back on her past experiences. She explained that she had lived prioritizing her studies since her school days. She noted that even when others went to clubs or hung out with friends to build memories, she thought studying was the natural thing to do, so she could not play to her heart's content.
However, after experiencing divorce, a change came to her daily life. Seo Dong-ju shared her feelings at the time, saying, "I had become a divorcee. Suddenly, I wanted to play so much." She continued, "That was when I had my first drink. Imagine thinking you had your first drink after turning 30. It was a whole new world." It was a confession that the drinking sessions and nightlife culture, which she had not experienced for a long time, felt like a new world to her.
The deviation she started late was more intense than expected. Seo Dong-ju stated, "I wanted to drink more, and play with my friends while being drunk until the sun came up. It was so much fun that I did it for a year." She recalled those days with a laugh, adding, "Since I was already old." The period during which she intensively enjoyed nightlife was about one year, from age thirty-two to thirty-three. It was a life completely different from her past, where she focused on studies and self-management.
What was even more surprising was her schedule at the time. Even while attending school, Seo Dong-ju headed to Las Vegas in the United States on weekends. She explained, "When classes ended on Friday, I would take a flight to Las Vegas. I would have a pool party, enjoy the clubs, and play, and then come back on a flight in the early morning of Monday. Then I would go to class." This means she repeated a grueling routine of flying out after Friday classes to spend a glamorous weekend, returning in the early morning of Monday, and heading straight to school.
However, the freedom at that time was not purely enjoyable. Seo Dong-ju confessed, "It was very hard because I was playing late when I shouldn't have been playing." This implies that because she was indulging in experiences she felt she hadn't fully enjoyed during her youth all at once, it placed a heavy burden on her physical strength. It was a confession that revealed both the sense of liberation felt when someone who had prioritized studying and responsibility for a long time experiences freedom late, and the corresponding fatigue they had to endure.
Seo Dong-ju married a Korean-American man in 2008 but divorced in 2014, and the fact of her divorce was belatedly revealed in 2018. Later, in June last year, she remarried a man four years younger who works in the entertainment industry. Having gone through marriage, divorce, and a new start, she looked back on her past choices honestly in this video rather than hiding them. It is a story of how she experienced all at once the pleasures she had postponed during the time she was devoted to her studies.
The reason Seo Dong-ju's confession is drawing attention is not simply because of the fact that she enjoyed clubs and pool parties. It is because, in that someone who had lived prioritizing what they had to do for a long time tried to reclaim the time they felt they had missed at some point. However, the late deviation provided new experiences and a sense of liberation while simultaneously leaving a physical burden. While Seo Dong-ju recalled the time she once enjoyed passionately with a laugh, it made one reflect on the fact that even in enjoying freedom, a suitable pace and balance for oneself are necessary.
