Culinary researcher Sim Yeong-sun recounts scolding Hyundai family member
Culinary researcher Sim Yeong-sun shared anecdotes on tvN's "You Quiz on the Block," including a time she reprimanded a member of the Hyundai Group family for a cooking error and her past interaction with entertainer Yoo Jae-suk.
During a broadcast of "You Quiz on the Block" on the 21st, Sim Yeong-sun revealed she once reprimanded a Hyundai family member for adding too much mustard to a sauce, unaware of the woman's identity.
Culinary researcher Sim Yeong-sun has revealed past instances of her uncompromising culinary philosophy, including reprimanding a member of a chaebol family and a past encounter where she scolded entertainer Yoo Jae-suk.
Appearing on the 365th episode of the tvN entertainment program "You Quiz on the Block" broadcast on the 21st, Sim shared stories from her life in cooking and her special connections. During the broadcast, Yoo Jae-suk recalled their previous meeting in 2014 during a cooking competition on the SBS entertainment program "Running Man," where Sim served as a judge.
At that time, Sim sternly scolded Yoo by hitting his hand while he was conducting the competition. When Yoo asked if she remembered, Sim instead recalled how she herself was heavily criticized by viewers. "I was scolded a lot. Viewers scolded me so much for hitting his hand," she said, recounting the reaction at the time.
However, Sim had her reasons. She explained that she judged his actions to be dangerous, noting that he was not properly protecting his fingers while using a knife. "It could have been a big problem if you had chopped like that with your hand spread out like that," she said, explaining that her reprimand was for safety rather than mere entertainment. Upon hearing this, Yoo responded by saying, "You did well," resolving the situation lightheartedly.
Sim's strictness was not limited to broadcasts. She is known to have taught cooking to various figures from chaebol families for a long time. Individuals such as Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun and Hotel Shilla President Lee Boo-jin have been mentioned as having taken her cooking lessons. On this broadcast, an anecdote involving the Hyundai family drew particular interest.
Sim expressed deep affection for Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun, stating, "She is someone I love, respect, and cherish deeply." She recalled being invited to the home of Chairwoman Hyun's father-in-law to teach cooking, noting that when she entered, several people wearing identical anonymous aprons all stood up to greet her. "I received great courtesy and taught with a truly grateful heart," she recalled.
However, an unexpected event occurred during the teaching process. Sim confessed that she once harshly scolded a woman in the household for putting too much mustard in the sauce, not realizing she was the "aunt" (jageun-eomma) of the Hyundai family. "I did not recognize the aunt of that house and scolded her for putting too much mustard in the sauce," she confessed. "So even now, I feel sorry and regretful." She explained that while her reaction might have been different had she known the person's identity, she was focused on the perfection of the cooking at the time.
These anecdotes demonstrate that Sim does not easily bend her culinary standards regardless of the person before her. Whether it was entertainer Yoo Jae-suk or members of chaebol families, she immediately pointed out mistakes when she saw them. However, it appears her intention was to teach cooking properly rather than to disrespect her subjects.
Following the previous controversy regarding her hitting Yoo Jae-suk's hand, the revelation of her strict attitude toward chaebol families has once again made her unique teaching style a topic of conversation. Her approach of prioritizing the basics and accuracy of cooking over glamorous backgrounds or social status remains an impressive anecdote.
