Actor Yoo Jae-myung reveals the special meaning behind his son Yoo Mo-deun's name
Actor Yoo Jae-myung revealed the deep meaning behind the name of his son, Yoo Mo-deun, born when the actor was 47, explaining it as a wish for his son to embrace every part of his life.
Actor Yoo Jae-myung has revealed the special meaning behind his son's name. His late-born son, whom he had at age 47, was given the somewhat unique name "Yoo Mo-deun." While some people around him criticized him for choosing a name based on his own whims without considering the child's destiny, for Yoo Jae-myung, the name carries a deep message of cheering for his son's entire life.
Recently, Yoo Jae-myung appeared on the YouTube channel of instructor Lee Ji-young to discuss his views on child education. Having a son born in 2019, he stated he became a father at age 47, noting he is a "case of having a child late." Living with a son who arrived later in life appears to have added special meaning to his role as a parent and his perspective on his child's life.
His son's name drew particular attention. "The child's name is Mo-deun. It is Yoo Mo-deun, and there were several candidates when we were deciding on the name," Yoo explained. Although he initially considered other names, he felt they were not quite right when it came time to decide. "I thought, 'This name is really good,' and tried to go with it, but it didn't feel right. The feeling wasn't there," he recalled.
After much deliberation, the name "Mo-deun" came to mind one day. However, the unique naming led to mixed reactions from those around him. "I got scolded a lot by people around me. They asked why I was naming the child whatever I wanted, since it is the child's destiny..." Yoo confessed. Concerns followed regarding whether parents should unilaterally decide a name that could influence a child's life.
Nevertheless, Yoo Jae-myung had a clear philosophy behind choosing this name. "It simply means that everything is your life," he explained. He emphasized, "It is not like 'do everything well' or 'possess everything,' but rather that everything is your life. It means to fully enjoy your entire life, as it is—the good and the bad, the failures and the successes."
The meaning embedded in the name aligns with Yoo Jae-myung's views on child education. While acknowledging that parents need to play a role in guiding the direction of a child's life, he made it clear that the child is ultimately the subject who lives that life. Rather than forcing a child to fit into the success standards or expectations set by parents, he believes it is important to help the child fully accept the various experiences of their own life.
Yoo Jae-myung's explanation contains an attitude of respecting the child as an independent individual rather than possessing or controlling them. He believes that not only good things, but also failures and frustrations, are precious parts that constitute a person's life. The name "Yoo Mo-deun" is not a command for his son to be good at everything, but rather a father's encouragement to fully accept and enjoy whatever kind of life he lives.
