Japanese media faces backlash for speculating on Yuna Kim's appearance
Japanese media outlet Nishispo Web OTTO! has faced backlash for publishing provocative reports regarding Yuna Kim's appearance, highlighting changes in her look and suggesting plastic surgery following her recent social media posts.

Nishispo Web OTTO! has drawn criticism for publishing a provocative article that compares recent photos of Yuna Kim to her athlete years and introduces netizen speculation regarding plastic surgery. While some Japanese netizens commented on her changed features, Korean fans expressed continued affection for the former Sochi Winter Olympics silver medalist.
While "figure skating queen" Yuna Kim has drawn attention from Japanese media and local netizens with recent photos of her daily life, reports evaluating her appearance have come under fire. The coverage has focused on her changed atmosphere compared to her athlete days and has introduced reactions suggesting plastic surgery, leading to criticism that the reporting treats natural changes over time as a controversy regarding her looks.

The Japanese media outlet Nishispo Web OTTO! recently introduced photos of Yuna Kim's daily life posted on social media, using a provocative headline to the effect of, "I can't recognize her anymore. 35-year-old Yuna Kim, her current look has completely changed! Has her face changed?" The article used sensational expressions to draw attention to her physical changes while introducing her everyday photos.
The outlet placed recent photos of Yuna Kim alongside images from her time as an athlete and her childhood to emphasize her changed atmosphere. Critics point out that by highlighting the difference between her intense impression during her competitive years and her current look, and by introducing certain negative reactions, the outlet made it appear as though the change in her appearance itself was a matter of controversy. Reactions have expressed discomfort with the fact that the change in the person's atmosphere was treated as a subject for evaluation rather than simply being noted.
Reactions from Korean fans were quite different. Upon seeing Yuna Kim's recent photos, fans expressed their unchanging affection, sending favorable reviews that she is still beautiful and lovely. Conversely, mixed reactions regarding her appearance appeared on Japanese portal sites such as Yahoo! Japan. Some netizens evaluated her looks, saying things like, "The Yuna Kim of the monolid days was charming," "She got double eyelids and now has a mass-produced face," and "She has no distinct features now, so she is not memorable."
Beyond simple opinions on her change in impression, comments speculating on whether she underwent plastic surgery also appeared. Criticism has been raised that reckless speculation surrounding an individual's appearance has gone too far, with reactions such as, "Didn't she change it through surgery anyway?" and "She looks like a completely different person." However, these comments are merely the claims of some netizens and cannot be seen as evidence to confirm actual plastic surgery.
There were also many counterarguments against the reporting and the comments. People questioned the need to treat the natural changes in face and atmosphere that occur as time passes in a mocking manner. Some expressed doubt about the appearance evaluations themselves, reacting with, "This is at the level of forced fault-finding," "It is just clickbait aiming for views," and "Isn't it enough that she is living happily?"
This controversy demonstrates the reality where an individual's private life becomes a subject of public evaluation the moment their daily photos are released. In particular, the method of comparing past photos with the present to find changes and linking them to plastic surgery suspicions or negative evaluations can reinforce prejudices about appearance. It has also been pointed out that provocative headlines designed to attract public attention can cause the person's current appearance to be consumed through a distorted lens.
Yuna Kim concluded her career as an active athlete after winning a silver medal at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. Since then, she has consistently drawn public attention as an iconic figure representing figure skating, and in 2022, she married Ko Woorim, a member of the group Forestella. Even after retirement, a single daily photo posted on social media shows her enduring topicality, leading to articles in foreign media and online debates.
However, the standard for confirming Yuna Kim's presence does not need to be the likes or dislikes regarding her appearance. The achievements she built as a world-class athlete and the symbolism imprinted on the public over a long time do not change based solely on the atmosphere felt in a specific photo. Voices are gaining strength that an attitude of viewing a person's current appearance as it is, rather than excessive evaluation surrounding natural changes, is necessary.
