Dream to You: Lee Hye-ri and Hwang In-youp face 15 years of divergent fates
ENA's 'Dream to You' explores the tragic past of Lee Hye-ri and Hwang In-youp, though viewership remains a challenge at 2.8%.
ENA's Monday-Tuesday drama 'Dream to You' added depth to its emotional narrative by fully unfolding the wounds of first love and the divergent paths of time. However, despite a solid cast and a poignant melodrama narrative, the viewership rating remained in the 2% range, leaving a challenge in balancing topical buzz with public resonance.

In the second episode of 'Dream to You' broadcast on the 14th, the hidden tragic reason why Subeen Woo (played by Hwang In-youp) and Jaejae Joo (played by Lee Hye-ri) had no choice but to part ways 15 years ago was revealed. The episode heightened dramatic tension by revealing that the two did not merely experience a simple breakup, but had lived life misunderstanding each other amidst accidents and losses that completely shook their respective lives.
According to viewership rating research companies, the broadcast recorded 2.8% nationwide. While it saw a slight rebound with a 0.1 percentage point increase from the first episode, it is a somewhat disappointing figure for a romance series expected to become a major hit.
Today's broadcast highlighted the relationship between the two during their innocent teenage years.
A young Subeen Woo and Jaejae Joo were like the only sanctuary in the world to each other. Moving toward their dreams, the two supported one another even within an imperfect reality, sketching out a future together.
In particular, Subeen Woo was the only person who sincerely congratulated Jaejae Joo by presenting her with a bouquet of flowers after she won the grand prize at a youth film festival. It was also Jaejae Joo who instilled courage in Subeen Woo, who was losing confidence under the coercive expectations of his father, Cheol-gyu Woo (played by Jung Hae-gyun).
However, as time passed, the fates of the two twisted in an unexpected direction.
Fifteen years later, unlike the image of the girl who once dreamed of being a film director, Jaejae Joo was living her life having forgotten her dream after hitting the wall of reality. On the other hand, Subeen Woo appeared on the program 'Jaejae is Coming,' which Jaejae Joo is conducting, in order to complete the unfinished film 'Kyungsung Love Song.'
Just like during the youth film festival days in the past, Subeen Woo handed a bouquet of flowers to Jaejae Joo. However, unlike the warm memories of the past, the current Jaejae Joo coldly pushed him away.
Subeen Woo approached her cautiously, saying, "I'll return the dream I took from you. Even your first love, if you want it. How should I return it? What about your first love?"
However, unable to suppress her emotions, Jaejae Joo struck his cheek with the bouquet. While she outwardly expressed anger and resentment, inside lay a complex mix of long-accumulated wounds and unresolved longing.
The core of today's broadcast was the real reason the two had separated.
In the past, Subeen Woo chose to go to the United States to become a doctor, following the path set by his father, Cheol-gyu Woo. To Subeen Woo, who was trying to give up his dream of being a film director, Jaejae Joo held onto him until the very end by handing him the unfinished screenplay 'Kyungsung Love Song.'
But Subeen Woo did not return, and Jaejae Joo, who was waiting for him, met with an unexpected traffic accident while getting off a bus bound for Seoul to search for him.
After the accident, Jaejae Joo fell into a coma, and to make matters worse, she faced the tragedy of her father passing away before she could even wake up.
Even after barely regaining consciousness, Jaejae Joo's life could not return to how it was before. It took a long time not only to recover physically but also to overcome the mental scars. Ultimately, she had to let go of her dream and choose a life of adapting to reality.
The words Jaejae Joo threw at Subeen Woo, "Subeen Woo, you are my regret," were not mere resentment. In fact, it was resentment toward Subeen Woo and, at the same time, regret toward herself for losing her dream.
The tragedy between the two stemmed from different memories. Subeen Woo did not even know the fact that Jaejae Joo had been in an accident, while Jaejae Joo had lived believing that Subeen Woo had abandoned her.
However, fate brought the two together once again.
Jaejae Joo needed Subeen Woo's reappearance during the production process of the program, and she eventually went to find him. The moment she opened the door to the house where Subeen Woo was staying, the scene where water splashes and a rainbow unfolds under the sunlight hinted that the relationship between the two would enter a new phase.
'Dream to You' is attempting to differentiate itself by combining realistic themes such as the loss of dreams, family coercion, and regret over an unchosen life onto the familiar subject of first love.
In particular, Hwang In-youp and Lee Hye-ri are leading the center of the drama, delicately expressing the emotional lines that oscillate between the pure love of the past and the deep scars of the present.
However, regardless of the work's quality, the practical challenge of increasing the viewership rating remains. In a landscape where the romance genre faces intense competition, the key to 'Dream to You's success will be how convincingly it expands the emotional narrative of these two people across 15 years to capture the hearts of viewers.
