Park Wi faces backlash over 'editing framing' controversy

While YouTuber Park Wi has apologized for the controversy surrounding a fall accident involving his wheelchair on a KTX, the debate is expanding as past videos showing citizens and officials who helped him are being resurfaced. As criticisms arise that the actual situations in the videos differ from the impressions conveyed by thumbnails and subtitles, the issue is escalating into a heated debate over so-called 'editing framing.'

On the 28th, content related to disability mobility rights that Park Wi had previously released through his YouTube channel 'Wheracle' began to be re-examined on online communities and SNS. This movement to look back at Park's past content emerged following the recent KTX fall accident.

In particular, one of the controversial videos is a piece titled 'Riding the Republic of Korea subway in a wheelchair is...' The video thumbnail shows Park waiting in front of an elevator while several elderly people are using it. Some netizens argue that looking at the thumbnail alone, it could be interpreted as a situation where Park, a wheelchair user, is unable to use the elevator because of the elderly people.

However, the actual video follows with a different scene. The elderly people who were about to use the elevator noticed Park and yielded to him, telling him to go first, and Park declined, saying something to the effect of, "It's fine since I'm in a wheelchair anyway. Please go ahead."

Following this, Park added a subtitle to the scene that read, 'A man who values efficiency.'

Because of this, some netizens expressed discomfort, stating there is a significant temperature difference between the video's content and its thumbnail. They pointed out that even though assistance was actually provided, the thumbnail alone could make it seem as if the elderly people were obstructing the movement of the wheelchair user.

In another video titled 'I can only sigh....', a situation involving the wheelchair-accessible space on a bus appears.

In the video, Park asks an elderly person sitting in the wheelchair space to yield the seat. The elderly person points to an empty seat on the opposite side, asking if they can sit elsewhere because they have many belongings, and Park responds with the intent that he must use that specific space.

After the bus departed, Park requested the driver to stop due to safety concerns, and the elderly person gathered their belongings and moved seats. The bus driver also showed himself leaving the steering wheel to help organize the wheelchair space.

The controversial part is the subtitle used during this process. As Park included a subtitle to the effect of 'The driver who finally arrived,' criticisms emerged that there is a gap between the emotions conveyed by the subtitle and the actual scene where the driver and people around him were providing help. With the mention that the staff filming Park was also present at the scene, criticisms continued, questioning whether he 'emphasized his dissatisfaction even while receiving help.'

However, it is difficult to conclude from these scenes alone that Park intentionally criticized or vilified citizens or officials. This is because YouTube content involves a process of constructing a narrative within a limited time, where creators emphasize specific scenes or add their own perspectives through subtitles and thumbnails. The core of the issue lies in how such editing methods can guide the viewers' judgment regarding the actual situation.

The direct trigger for this controversy expanding further was the KTX fall accident.

On the 21st, Park released CCTV footage showing him falling after being tripped by the foot of a social service agent while moving in a wheelchair on a KTX. Based on the video, he expressed strong displeasure, stating, "It might not have been intentional, but I was angry at the action of placing a foot on the ramp."

However, after the video was released, controversy arose regarding whether it was appropriate to publicly criticize the official who was helping and apologizing to Park at the scene, especially given the high possibility that the social service agent's actions were not intentional.

Ultimately, Park deleted the video and released an apology. He apologized, stating that he had not sufficiently considered the position of the worker who was doing their best to help and had politely apologized at the time, and that his judgment was a result of looking at the situation only in a negative light.

Subsequently, the controversy expanded beyond the accident itself to a debate surrounding the nature of work at railway sites.

A netizen, who identified as a railway engineer, argued that in the process of operating wheelchair lifts, station staff or social service agents sometimes use their feet to secure the lift to ensure passenger safety due to the equipment's characteristics.
