Kim Mu-yeol Recalls Difficult Past Living in Shanty Town; Wife Yoon Seung-ah Moved to Tears

Actor Kim Mu-yeol, who is enjoying global popularity through the Netflix series 'Teach You a Lesson', appeared in a preview for the tvN variety show 'You Quiz on the Block' on the 24th, announcing his upcoming appearance.

Kim Mu-yeol boasted about the success of 'Teach You a Lesson', saying, "For the first time in 10 years, I heard from my neighbors that I am cool."

Yoo Jae Suk acknowledged Kim Mu-yeol's success, stating, "John Cena gave you a shout-out. He said Heo Nam Jun considers you a role model." Kim Mu-yeol shared that he and Heo Nam Jun celebrated their success together, saying, "We both said a huge congratulations to each other."

Yoo Jae Suk remarked, "I heard that during the filming of 'Teach You a Lesson', you practiced on the school playground pull-up bars during every break," to which Kim Mu-yeol smiled brightly and replied, "If there was anything to hang onto, I hung onto it. In May 2024, Kim Mu-yeol appeared on 'You Quiz' and confessed that he once lived in a shanty town on a hillside, stating, "Around the time I entered high school, my family's financial situation became difficult. My mother was a victim of a scam related to commercial property sales. People stormed into our house and put red seizure stickers on everything. We had to take buses and subways from Gyeonggi-do Gwangmyeong to Daehak-ro, but we were so economically struggling that my mother had to borrow money from neighbors just to cover transportation costs."

He recalled the difficult times, noting that his father collapsed in an accident during the year he turned twenty. "I don't know exactly what kind of accident it was because he was alone. He was found injured. My father had his entire head shaved when he was lying there. After being in a vegetative state for a long time, cancer was discovered and he underwent surgery. As the eldest son, I thought a lot about how I had to be strong." He added that although he entered the Department of Acting at Sungkyunkwan University, the tuition was a burden, so he took a leave of absence and worked various part-time jobs, including day labor, working in a mobile phone factory, hosting various events, and working as a building security guard.

'Teach You a Lesson' gained popularity through its fresh setting of a fictional government agency called the Teacher Rights Protection Bureau and the activities of unique characters who break conventional wisdom to restore the educational field. In its third week of release, it even reached number 1 on Netflix's Global TOP 10 non-English shows.
