HalMyungSoo to take first long break in 6 years

HalMyungSoo, JTBC's flagship digital variety show with 1.72 million subscribers, is entering its first long-term hiatus in six years. While the production team characterized the break as a "summer vacation" for recharging, attention is turning toward the program's future as the hiatus coincides with recent management challenges facing JTBC.

On the 24th, the production team of the HalMyungSoo YouTube channel announced the temporary break via a notice titled "HalMyungSoo Summer Vacation Guide de."

"We have been running without a break for six years, so we are going to recharge for a bit," the production team stated. "Please wait for us while reviewing HalMyungSoo. We will return prepared with big fun and big laughs. We will be back before summer ends, so please leave comments about what you want to see."

This marks the first time HalMyungSoo has taken a long hiatus since its debut in 2019. As the program has been beloved for Park Myung-soo's signature unfiltered wit and his chemistry with guests, fans are closely following the news.

However, some observers suggest this break may carry more significance than a simple reorganization, as the timing aligns with management instability at JTBC, the program's production company and broadcaster.

JTBC previously applied for corporate rehabilitation proceedings at the Seoul Bankruptcy Court due to issues regarding the repayment of securitized borrowings worth 20.6 billion won. While the court's approval of the Autonomous Restructuring Support (ARS) program postponed the decision on whether to commence rehabilitation proceedings, the situation is known to have impacted the broadcasting production environment.

Speculation regarding changes to the program's operation grew last month when news broke that a recording of HalMyungSoo had been canceled for one week.

The possibility of the show being discontinued was also indirectly addressed on air. During an appearance on KBS Cool FM's "Park Myung-soo's Radio Show" on the 8th, Park Mi-sun posed a sudden question to Park Myung-soo: "I heard you aren't doing HalMyungSoo anymore?"

Park Myung-soo responded with a flustered expression, saying, "I would prefer if you didn't mention that. This is a live broadcast, and we don't know what might happen," offering a cautious reaction.

At the time, JTBC cautioned against overinterpretation, explaining, "It is true that one week of filming was canceled, but it has not been confirmed that filming will be discontinued." However, with the official "summer vacation" announcement, interest is once again mounting regarding the program's future direction.

Having established itself as a leading digital variety brand over the last six years, HalMyungSoo faces an uncertain period. While the production team expressed a firm intention to return, fans are watching closely to see if this is merely a scheduled break or a precursor to significant changes.
