Lee Sang-soon pauses radio hosting due to health issues

Musician and guitarist Lee Sang-soon is drawing renewed attention for the rigorous daily routine he has maintained for nearly two years, following his sudden decision to temporarily pause hosting 'A Perfect Day with Lee Sang-soon' on MBC FM4U due to unexpected health issues. While he was widely known for his relaxed lifestyle on Jeju Island, the fact that he moved to Seoul and has been guarding the radio booth at a set time every single day has become a point of interest.

Recently, Lee underwent medical treatment and examinations following a sudden decline in his physical condition. He received a medical opinion stating that he needs rest due to 'vagus nerve dysfunction.' His agency, Antenna, announced that he would temporarily suspend activities, and Lee expressed his intention to return after fully recovering his health following additional detailed examinations.

The program he hosts, 'A Perfect Day with Lee Sang-soon,' premiered on November 4, 2024. Airing daily from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Lee was selected as the successor to DJ Yoon Do-hyun, sharing music and daily life with listeners for approximately two years.

A radio DJ is a profession where consistency of schedule is more important than it appears on the surface. Unlike performances that focus on specific dates, a DJ must be responsible for broadcasting at a fixed time every day. Especially in live broadcasts, one must keep promises to listeners regardless of their physical condition, which requires a steady life rhythm and concentration as the period continues.

This was an even greater change for Lee. For someone who had centered his life around living in Jeju for a long time, the sight of him commuting to a radio studio in Seoul every day was an unfamiliar scene to the public. While his relaxed daily life and studio scenes as a musician shown in 'Hyori's Bed and Breakfast' were his representative images, 'A Perfect Day' bestowed upon him a new daily routine of regular broadcasting labor.

In introducing the program, MBC cited Lee's musical taste and comfortable hosting style as his strengths. During the first broadcast, Lee also expressed his desire to create a radio show where he could share tastes with listeners through his low, slow voice and diverse genre selections.

In fact, radio is not new to Lee. He previously hosted SBS Radio's 'Roller Coaster's Listen Up' and EBS's 'World Music Travel,' and has also held the microphone as a special DJ several times on MBC's 'Bae Cheol-soo's Music Camp.' 'A Perfect Day' became another milestone in his musical career as a program he has hosted for a long period as a regular DJ with his own name at the forefront.

His musical foundation also aligned well with radio. After debuting with the fusion jazz group Wave in 1998, Lee built a unique musical color while active as a guitarist in the modern rock band Roller Coaster. Since then, he has demonstrated musical sensibilities that transcend genres and eras through various collaborations and solo works, including the Veranda Project with Kim Dong-ryul.

The catalyst for his explosive public recognition was in an area different from his musical activities. After marrying Lee Hyo-ri, his life in Jeju was revealed, and as the couple's daily life became known to the public through the MBC variety show 'Hyori's Bed and Breakfast,' Lee expanded his territory from a musician for music fans to a familiar entertainer for the general public.

In 'Hyori's Bed and Breakfast,' Lee was far from glamorous. His image of quietly playing the guitar, looking after the guests' daily lives, and having small conversations with Lee Hyo-ri actually turned his slow pace into a character. Even afterward, rather than asserting an exaggerated presence in variety shows, he built his own domain through his characteristic calm tone and nonchalant humor.

The fact that he, after settling his life in Jeju and moving to Seoul, accepted the daily job of a radio DJ was a significant change in his life. In fact, when he was selected for 'A Perfect Day,' the fact that he was a regular DJ broadcasting every day from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM drew significant attention.

This is also why fans are looking back at his past schedule following this health issue. Since Lee has not been someone who frequently took breaks from broadcasting or overtly displayed high levels of activity, the fact that he suddenly suspended his hosting has caused considerable concern.

Lee stated that his condition suddenly worsened on August 26, making it difficult to host the radio show, and subsequently underwent examinations and consultations, explaining that he is still waiting for additional detailed tests.

It is important not to confuse 'vagus nerve dysfunction' with 'vasovagal syncope,' a more commonly known condition. Lee's specific symptoms, cause, and future treatment schedule have not been disclosed, and his agency stated they will adjust future schedules based on his recovery status.

Lee expressed, “I will take enough time to fully recover my health before returning.” The host, who shared music and stories with listeners every afternoon, has temporarily stepped away from the microphone.

Ultimately, this hiatus highlights the gap between Lee's public image and his actual lifestyle. While his representative image was a leisurely life in Jeju and a slow-paced musical life alongside Lee Hyo-ri, behind the scenes, he had been maintaining a different routine: meeting listeners at a set time every day in a Seoul radio studio.

What Lee needs now is not a rushed return, but sufficient time to recover. Much like the title of his program, 'A Perfect Day,' fans hope that the day he sits before the microphone again will not be a forced one, but a complete day achieved after regaining his health and rhythm.
