Nam Yu-jeong faces mixed reviews at first solo Waterbomb stage
Former BBGIRLS member Nam Yu-jeong marks her solo debut at Waterbomb Sokcho 2026, facing scrutiny over her musical identity.
Nam Yu-jeong, the singer and actress who departed from BBGIRLS, took the stage alone at a major music festival for the first time since leaving the group, but unlike expectations, some online reactions were cold. As a first test where she had to step out from the group's halo and fill the stage with only her name and music, this Waterbomb stage carried significance beyond a simple festival appearance.

On the 22nd, Nam performed a solo set at 'Waterbomb Sokcho 2026' held at the Hanwha Resort Seorak Sono in Sokcho, Gangwon Province. This was her first Waterbomb stage since her debut with BBGIRLS in 2016, and it served as a formal announcement of her solo career following her departure from the team in April 2024.
On this day, Nam reinterpreted Jewelry's 'I Really Like You', Park Myeong-su's 'Prince of the Sea', and Uhm Jeong-hwa's 'Invitation' in her own style. Notably, during 'Invitation', BTOB's Minhyuk made a surprise appearance to perform alongside her, adding volume to the stage.
Appearing in the typical Waterbomb style with short shorts and sleeveless tops, Nam connected with the audience through her bright expressions and active performance. However, after the performance videos spread online, mixed evaluations regarding the song selection, stage composition, and performance quality followed.
The most prominent issue was the question of identity: 'What is Nam Yu-jeong's music?' Since all the songs presented that day were remakes of existing pop songs, some netizens reacted that the unique musical color expected from a singer starting solo activities was not sufficiently revealed. Criticisms such as 'her own songs are not visible' were accompanied by opinions comparing her to her time in the group.
Evaluations of the performance were also not entirely favorable. Some offered critiques that the harmony between dance and vocals was somewhat awkward and that her stage presence did not meet expectations. The analysis suggests that while group activities consolidated the personalities and energy of multiple members into a single teamwork, a solo stage requires one singer to be responsible for vocals, performance, and stage narrative simultaneously, which made her relative weaknesses more clearly visible.
Of course, not all reactions were negative. Some fans welcomed the sight of Nam on stage after a long time, and others offered support, noting that given it was her first major solo stage, her future activities should be observed. It is also necessary to consider that it is difficult to judge the actual reaction of the live audience or the overall success of the performance based solely on some negative online comments.
Nam was also aware of the pressure this stage carried. She previously appeared on the YouTube channel 'Ddip' and opened up about the pressure and expectations of solo activities, stating, "Even when I was in the team, I had never released a solo song." She added that while she was contemplating appearances on music shows, she gained the opportunity through Waterbomb to challenge herself on stage in a new way.
In Nam's career, BBGIRLS is a name that can never be separated. In 2021, while active as a member of BBGIRLS, the team entered the center of popular culture several years after their debut due to the explosive reverse climb of 'Rollin' triggered by videos of military base cheering performances. Although they later changed their name to BBGIRLS, Nam left the team in 2024, and currently, BBGIRLS is active as a three-member group consisting of Minyoung, Eunji, and Lee Yu-na.
Therefore, this Waterbomb was not merely a summer festival to enjoy water and music for Nam, but rather close to a first public evaluation undergone during the transition from 'BBGIRLS's Nam Yu-jeong' to 'Solo Artist Nam Yu-jeong.' The core task for her future activities has emerged as how she will build her musical identity and stage competitiveness in the space where the safe, collective narrative of a group has disappeared.
The fact that the reaction to her first stage was somewhat mixed does not necessarily mean failure. Rather, it significantly means she has reached a point where she must redefine her coordinates as a solo artist, separate from the success of her group activities. Whether Nam can build her own unique color through her own music and performance beyond remakes is expected to be a major turning point in her journey 'after BBGIRLS.'
