Park Wi Faces Criticism Over Comments Regarding Plans for a Son, "So He Can Carry Me When He Grows Up"
YouTuber Park Wi is facing online criticism after past remarks regarding his desire for a son—specifically mentioning wanting a son to "carry him" due to his physical limitations—resurfaced. The comments have sparked a debate over the expectations parents place on their children.
YouTuber Park Wi's past remarks have once again been spotlighted online. This time, it concerns discussions surrounding his and his wife Song Ji-eun's plans for a second generation and the gender of their first child. Following previous remarks where he expressed a desire to have two children while also sharing fears that his disability might prevent him from fully handling childcare, a scene where he previously said, "I hope the first one is a son. So a son can carry me around," has spread again, sparking debate. In particular, the expression that seems to expect a son to compensate for his physical limitations has become the focus of criticism.
Recently, in online communities, the plans for a second generation revealed by Park Wi and his wife Song Ji-eun during their appearance on singer Sean's YouTube channel last April drew renewed attention. When Sean asked the two about their plans for children at the time, Park Wi replied, "We have a lot of (thoughts/intentions)." While there was a strong will to have children, both individuals faced realistic concerns regarding the actual matter of becoming parents.
Song Ji-eun stated that she has liked children since before her marriage and has consistently thought about having children. However, she explained that it was difficult to make a decision readily because, once a child is born, parents cannot temporarily pause their responsibilities depending on their choices. She confessed that they worried about whether they could be parents capable of fully embracing a child, saying, "Once a life is born, there is no pause button." She noted that she thought carefully about whether she could take good care of a child, considering the physical burden as well.
After much deliberation, Song Ji-eun revealed that she decided to undergo IVF treatment this year. Park Wi also revealed both his desire for children and his fears. While saying he has wanted to have two children his whole life, he worried that his physical constraints might make it difficult to care for a child directly. He also mentioned that if a situation arose where he added more burden to his wife, he would feel sorry and lose self-esteem. He added, "I gained confidence because someone said, 'Do you raise a child with strength? You raise them with love.'"
Song Ji-eun also expressed her wish to have both a son and a daughter. In particular, regarding the reason she wants a son, she explained that she wants to raise a child who resembles Park Wi's personality and warm heart. She described Park Wi's kindness as a talent and expressed her intention to raise a son who resembles him well and send him out into the world. Their remarks contained both the desire to have children and the concerns about whether they could fulfill their responsibilities as parents.
However, as Park Wi's remarks in a past video were summoned again, the controversy spread in a different direction. In a video released on Park Wi's YouTube channel in September 2024, he said, "I hope the first one is a son. So a son can carry me around, and I want to protect a daughter." As this remark spread again, some netizens expressed discomfort, saying it sounds as if he is expecting a son to be an existence that compensates for his physical discomfort. The sight of Song Ji-eun making a stiff expression after hearing her husband's words was also mentioned.
The core of the criticism lies not in the fact that Park Wi wants children, but in how he expressed the role he expects from the child. While a child can be an existence that gives strength to parents, if the expectation that a child of a specific gender must care for or protect the parent comes first, it can be perceived as assigning responsibility to the child in advance. In particular, the issue of parents with disabilities raising children is a matter that must consider not only individual physical conditions but also the division of roles with a spouse, surrounding support, and the care environment.
On the other hand, it is also possible to take the view that one should be cautious about judging Park Wi's qualities as a parent or his actual parenting attitude by taking only a portion of his past remarks. It is difficult to judge entirely from a single remark whether the expression in the video came in the context of a joke or a light wish, or what kind of expectations he actually has for his children. However, in a situation where public words are repeatedly re-examined, there is a need to reflect on how the individual's expressions can be perceived.
As Park Wi and Song Ji-eun's plans for a second generation draw attention again, the fact that the two have been contemplating the matter of becoming parents so carefully is also being highlighted. The desire to have a child and the realistic fear of childcare can coexist. The important thing is that a child is not an existence born to fulfill the needs of the parents, but an independent individual. This controversy is also leading beyond curiosity about the couple's personal plans to questions about what kind of expectations parents should have for their children.
