Park Wi faces criticism over joke directed at wife Song Ji-eun's close friend
Park Wi is facing online backlash after a joke he made toward CCM singer Yeniel, a close friend of his wife Song Ji-eun, resurfaced on the internet.
Park Wi has become the center of controversy after a joke he made to his wife Song Ji-eun's close friend was belatedly re-examined online. As the parties involved did not offer a significant reaction, the scene where Park Wi personally apologized and attempted to manage the situation instead drew the attention of netizens. While some interpret it as a simple gag, criticism continues regarding whether the remarks made toward his wife's close friend were appropriate.
The controversial scene was captured in a video titled "I let her taste the flavor of marriage," uploaded this past July to the YouTube channel 'WERACLE' operated by Park Wi. In the video, Yeniel, a CCM singer and close friend of Song Ji-eun, appeared to reminisce about the couple's dating period. During a comfortable conversation based on their long-standing friendship, a remark made by Park Wi became the spark for the delayed controversy.
Introducing Yeniel, Park Wi explained that she was "the person who told us [about our relationship] in the early stages of our dating." In response, Yeniel recalled the moment she first learned about the relationship between Park Wi and Song Ji-eun. She stated that after recognizing Park Wi from a distance and being introduced to Song Ji-eun as his girlfriend, she immediately burst into tears.
Upon hearing Yeniel's story, Park Wi trailed off, saying, "Ah, perhaps those tears were... originally for me..." It was a joke implying that Yeniel might have had feelings for him. However, neither Yeniel nor Song Ji-eun showed much of a reaction. As the atmosphere shifted differently than expected, Park Wi apologized, saying, "I am sorry," while Song Ji-eun attempted to settle the situation by interpreting her friend's tears differently, saying, "Perhaps they were tears because she couldn't let Song Ji-eun go."
Park Wi subsequently left the scene, stating, "I was trying to make a joke, but both of them didn't seem to get it..." The video also featured a subtitle that read, "Please leave a comment if you understood." While the scene passed as a lighthearted joke during the conversation at the time, as the video regained attention, interpretations regarding the context of the remarks and the reactions of the recipients have diverged.
There is significant critical response online. Some netizens expressed opinions such as, "It seems they didn't fail to understand, but rather didn't respond because they were dumbfounded," "That is not a joke to make to your wife's close friend," and "I don't understand making such remarks to my wife's friend." The criticism points out that the perspective of the person receiving the joke and the atmosphere at the time should have been considered. However, it is difficult to conclude whether the two actually felt discomfort based solely on the reactions in the short video.
This controversy is spreading more rapidly as it intersects with existing debates surrounding Park Wi. Previously, Park Wi faced criticism after releasing CCTV footage showing him falling while disembarking from a KTX using a wheelchair. The footage captured the moment Park Wi fell as a social service agent's foot caught a wheel of the wheelchair. A debate arose regarding whether it was appropriate to release the footage given that the social service agent had apologized immediately after the accident.
Ultimately, Park Wi posted an apology and changed the video to private. He also voluntarily resigned from his position as an ambassador for the Seoul Metropolitan Government and suspended his YouTube activities. Since then, various controversies have continued online as past remarks and actions in his videos have come back into focus. Interest in his past content has also grown due to the so-called "adopted daughter controversy" involving actresses connected to his father, director Park Chan-hong.
YouTube content may be consumed as everyday conversation showing intimacy at the time of production, but it can be reinterpreted in a different context as time passes. Especially in settings where a couple and close acquaintances are together, not only the intention of the person making the joke but also how the other party receives it becomes an important criterion for judgment. Regarding this scene, arguments are clashing between the explanation that it was a simple gag and the criticism that the remarks failed to consider the boundaries of the relationship. As Park Wi has not released a separate statement, the controversy is expected to continue for the time being as past videos are being summoned again.
