Han Ga-in and Kim Dong-jun solve 'doppelganger' mystery
Actress Han Ga-in and actor Kim Dong-jun jokingly trace their uncanny resemblance back to their maternal grandfathers in a new video.
Actress Han Ga-in and actor Kim Dong-jun, formerly of the group ZE:A, brought laughter to fans by personally investigating the long-standing online 'doppelganger' controversy surrounding them. As discussions persisted regarding how two people who are not siblings could look so remarkably alike—with people asking, "Where on earth did these genes come from?"—the investigation eventually summoned even their maternal grandfathers.

On the afternoon of the 17th, a video titled "The Doppelgangers Finally Revealed as Siblings: Will Han Ga-in be hospitalized again if she visits Kim Dong-jun? (New Recruit 4)" was released on the YouTube channel 'Han Ga-in's Free Woman.'
The two are currently playing siblings in a project featuring Kim Dong-jun. With Han Ga-in making a special appearance as Kim Dong-jun's older sister, their visual similarity, which feels almost like a real family, has once again become a hot topic.
Their resemblance has been evaluated as going beyond mere similarities in specific facial expressions or hairstyles. Because their facial contours, eye shapes, nose structures, and smiling expressions overlap, online communities and broadcasting circles have frequently described them as "looking like siblings" or "looking like doppelgangers" in the past.
In fact, during this filming, it was the production crew who first pointed out their resemblance. While having lunch with the cast, a crew member remarked, "Their parents don't look that much alike. It's as if two people with completely different looks produced children who look exactly the same."
While physical resemblance between parents and children is common, there are cases where features of a specific grandparent or relative appear strongly without heavily overlapping with the parents' faces. Since physical traits such as face shape, skin tone, eyes, and nose are determined by a complex combination of various genetic factors, it is difficult to explain family resemblances simply through a single generation.
Han Ga-in also expressed curiosity at the crew's comment. "That's also strange. By what principle did that happen?" she asked, wondering where their resemblance originated.
At this, the crew brought up Kim Dong-jun's family genetic traits, starting with, "Or perhaps Dong-jun, your grandfather's side is also..." To this, Han Ga-in asked Kim Dong-jun, "Which side of your family looks somewhat exotic?"
Kim Dong-jun immediately thought of his maternal grandfather. He explained, "My maternal grandfather looks very exotic."
Then, Han Ga-in also mentioned her maternal side. She revealed that she has a maternal grandfather who looks considerably like her, saying, "Our maternal grandfather is also..."
At this point, the 'doppelganger mystery' between the two took an even more interesting turn. Kim Dong-jun, having seen a photo of Han Ga-in's maternal grandfather before, marveled, "He is so handsome."
Beyond the idea that a granddaughter simply inherited handsome looks, he jokingly connected the possibility that his own facial features resemble the family of Han Ga-in's maternal side.
The crew eventually wrapped up the situation by saying, "Could it be that your maternal grandfathers actually look exactly the same?" The absurd conclusion—that two people with no actual blood relation found the origin of their resemblance through their respective maternal ancestors—brought laughter.
The connection between the two is even more eye-catching because, while they are not actual siblings, they appear as siblings in the work. Having been consumed as 'look-alike celebrities' in the past, the two have now been given a family setting, making their visual similarity an interesting device that supports the drama's premise.
After gaining fame as a CF model in 2002, Han rose to stardom by showcasing her distinct features and stable acting skills in dramas such as 'Yellow Handkerchief,' 'Terms of Endearment,' 'Yu Hee, the Witch,' and 'Moon Embracing the Sun.' In particular, she left a mark as a representative actress by playing the lead role, Heo Yeon-u, in 'Moon Embracing the Sun,' driving the work's success. Recently, she has been expanding her connection with the public in different ways, not only through acting but also by sharing honest stories about marriage, family, and daily life through her YouTube channel.
Kim debuted with ZE:A in 2010 and has balanced activities as both a singer and an actor. Since his group activities, he has drawn attention for his delicate features and distinct looks, comparable to female idols, and has since solidified his position as an actor in various works such as 'Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet,' 'Chief of Staff,' 'More Than Friends,' and 'Korea-Khitan War.' Recently, he has been expanding his range by moving between variety shows and dramas.
What is interesting is that their resemblance is not just a simple optical illusion but leaves such a strong impression that it is repeatedly mentioned even on actual filming sets. However, it cannot be concluded that their appearances stem from the same genetic lineage. Human faces are the result of numerous genetic combinations, and significant levels of physical similarity can appear even between people with no blood relation.
Ultimately, the 'maternal grandfather theory' raised in this video is closer to a playful speculation surrounding their resemblance rather than a scientifically confirmed genetic lineage. However, the fact that two people born into entirely different families discovered similar facial features in their respective maternal sides created an intriguing topic around the phenomenon of 'looking alike.'
While they meet as siblings in the actual production, they share no blood relation in reality. Nevertheless, the moment they stand side-by-side on screen, their uncanny visual harmony makes them look like a natural family, making this special appearance even more unique. Moving beyond the public's use of the term 'doppelganger,' the story of their resemblance has blossomed into a humorous 'family search' that traces back past their parents to their maternal grandfathers.
