He politely announced the cessation of his activities, saying, "Although I am leaving the stage, I will never forget the warmth you have shown me. I am sincerely grateful to everyone who has loved actor Jang Dong-joo until now."

Last November, he suddenly posted "I am sorry" on his Instagram before going into hiding. In January, he came forward claiming that he had lost billions of won after his phone was hacked and he was subjected to extortion. He also parted ways with his new agency after just one month.

At the time, he shared his heartbreaking story, saying, "A call came from an unknown number, and I discovered that my phone had been completely hacked. I borrowed money by any means necessary. My family even sold their home for me. One debt led to another due to the urgency, and I ended up losing billions of won. And I was buried in debt."

He debuted in 2017 with the KBS2 drama School 2017 and went on to appear in tvN's Criminal Minds, SBS's I'll Be Your Night, OCN's Mr. Temporary Teacher, and the films The Count and Handsome Guys, among others. His most recent work is the SBS drama Starting Today I'm Human, which wrapped up at the end of February.
